This Caribbean Destination Is the No. 1 Winter Travel Spot, According to Tripadvisor

Looks like we're all craving some fun in the sun in the Dominican Republic.

More than half of Americans (58 percent) say they plan to travel this upcoming season, according to Tripadvisor’s Winter Travel Index, released this week. While most (91 percent) of the respondents say they plan to travel for specific reasons like winter festivals, skiing, and cultural holidays, some plan to go off to far-flung destinations to enjoy time for themselves too. That includes heading to Tripadvisor’s top trending destination, Las Galeras, in the Dominican Republic.

“This season, we’re seeing Americans confident in taking bigger trips. About half plan to travel more than they did last winter, and they are more likely to take a long trip (5+ nights),” Alice Jong, senior research analyst at Tripadvisor, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure. “Price and weather top the list of hesitations about travel, while COVID-19 has dropped to a more moderate concern. The bottom line is the vast majority (73 percent) agree that travel is extremely important to them, and they’ll prioritize it this season and into 2024.”

So, how much more, exactly, are people planning to travel this winter? According to the findings, the majority (76 percent) said they would take one to two trips, while almost a quarter (24 percent) plan to take three or more. And though the findings note that domestic travel still reigns supreme, with 68 percent of American travelers noting they plan to stay in the U.S. this winter, one-third of respondents said they plan to travel internationally.

Tripadvisors report also noted that many of those international trips will occur in the Caribbean, including the aforementioned number one trending destination, Las Galeras in the Dominican Republic.

The remote fishing village in the Caribbean nation is well-known and loved for its rugged landscape, awe-inspiring white sand beaches that flow into the crystalline sea, and fantastic land-based adventures like horseback riding and ATVing through the forests.

The second-most popular destination, Fasmendhoo, Maldives, echoes people’s desires for a tropical getaway. It’s followed by a city escape in Hong Kong in third, the town of Frederiksted in the U.S. Virgin Islands in fourth, and rounding out the top five, is a particular favorite here at T+L, Herradura, a town in the 2024 Destination of the Year, Costa Rica.
