Carhartt and its Recommerce Partner Are Scaling Up

Trove, the re-commerce technology provider for Canada Goose, Patagonia, Levi’s and Carhartt, is scaling up its North American operations with five new facilities in the United States and Canada.

The resale company plans to facilitate its “accelerating expansion” by certifying a growing network of “Trove Recommerce Powered” partner logistics facilities, it revealed Thursday. New additions include “several locations” owned by the international shipping and logistics provider Savino Del Bene and circular textile operator Tersus Solutions, as well as Trove’s owned and operated ReWarehouse. Before the expansion, Trove’s network consisted of just one facility, it said.

At the same time, Trove has grown its network of repair, replenishment, cleaning and recycling partners across a range of materials, it added. Looking ahead, the company said it is eyeing a “near-term European expansion” as well.

“This is a huge milestone for Trove: We’re expanding our proprietary Recommerce Operating system that is custom-built for resale and circular services to meet the growing scale of our company through strategic partnerships,” Gayle Tait, CEO of Trove, said in a statement. “Trove Powered Partners will benefit from more than a decade of resale operations expertise and efficient processes through Trove’s software, propelling the industry towards a more sustainable future.”

Scaling up is no easy feat, she added.

“Scaling recommerce requires software that manages built-in unit economics from trade in, through operations and reselling the item,” Tait continued, highlighting how the company’s technology “intelligently and dynamically informs decisions on which items to resell and how to resell them, driving both scale and efficiency that unlocks profitability.”

“That is how circular businesses will ultimately unlock the growth we need to incentivize business model shifts,” she said.

Established in 1899, Savino Del Bene has grown into a multinational shipping company—with more than 300 offices across five continents—managing air, sea and land transport solutions. Tersus, founded 110 years later in 2009, supports brands including The North Face, Patagonia, REI and Lululemon in their branded resale endeavors by providing “environmentally friendly” cleaning technology alongside a “full suite” of textile reclamation and resale logistics services, including repairs, upcycling, recycling, pick, pack and ship services.

“We are proud to play a key role in supporting Trove’s expansion efforts,” Raffaele Brazzini, CEO of Savino Del Bene U.S.A., said in a statement. “Our extensive experience in the shipping and logistics industry, along with our global network and relationships with the world’s leading carriers, allows us to provide tailored solutions that meet Trove partners’ demands in the international marketplace.”

According to Trove, it has processed millions of pre-owned items for partner brands, including newcomers this year Canada Goose, Carhartt and Brooks, and diverted more than 2 million kilograms of CO2e and more than hundreds of thousands of kilograms of waste.

On Wednesday, Carhartt revealed it would expand its partnership with Trove following positive feedback its re-commerce program received in its first three months. Effective immediately, the workwear brand expanded Carhartt Reworked to accept trade-ins at 35 company retail stores. It expects to begin taking mail-in trade-ins starting later this year.

Carhartt originally piloted the program at just six stores. Since March, it said, it has extended the life of more than 9,000 garments and kept 40,000 products out of landfills.

“We are encouraged by the positive support and feedback the program has received over the first three months, and we are excited to expand it so more hardworking people can get their hands on gear that is not done working,” Gretchen R. Valade, director of sustainability at Carhartt, said in a statement. “With the help of Trove, the expansion reinforces our commitment of building a better world through reducing our environmental impact and keeping countless Carhartt garments out of landfills.”
