Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford's Relationship Timeline

They met as kids at summer camp.

Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford's love story is something out of a rom-com. As kids, they met at summer camp and became pen pals but eventually lost touch when they got older. Over a decade later, the two briefly reconnected on Facebook before both deciding to deactivate their accounts. Fate had other plans, however, and brought Mulligan and Mumford into each other's lives once more when they both worked on the film Inside Llewyn Davis. 

At the time, Carey joked with Marcus that they "probably should get married" after "destiny" kept bringing them back together. And they did. In 2012, they tied the knot on a farm in Somerset, England, and a few years later, they started a family. 

Today, Mulligan and Mumford share three children — a daughter, Evelyn Grace, a son, Wilfred, and a baby girl whose name has yet to be disclosed — and while they tend to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, they are still one of the cutest couples around.

1990s: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford meet as kids at summer camp.

Back in 2015, Vogue reported that Mulligan first met Mumford when she was 12 years old at a Christian youth summer camp and that the two kept in touch as pen pals. The actress later confirmed this statement was true during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett in December 2023.

"We were friends when we were kids. We went to camp together,” she said, adding that she wrote in her diary that Mumford "was the nicest [and] the kindest person I’d ever met, and I gave him a nine and a half out of ten.”

Despite his kindness, Carey didn't think the musician was "boyfriend material" back then, telling the hosts: "I also wrote that he definitely wasn't boyfriend material. Not that I'd ever had a boyfriend at that time! But I decided that he was not it."

February 2011: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford spark dating rumors with a public kiss.

Carey and Marcus later reconnected as adults when they were both working on the film Inside Llewyn Davis, and it wasn't long before they started to spark dating rumors after sharing a very public kiss at a Mumford & Sons concert in the U.K.

August 2011: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford get engaged.

After five months of dating, Mulligan and Mumford got engaged — when you know, you know.

April 2012: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford get married.

Less than a year after their engagement, Carey and Marcus tied the knot on a farm in Somerset, England, with the singer's dad officiating the ceremony. The bride wore Prada (as did her bridesmaids), and amongst the 200 guests — Sienna Miller, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Colin Firth were in attendance.

May 2012: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford make their first public appearance together as newlyweds.

A month after getting married, Carey and Marcus stepped out as newlyweds for the first time at the 2012 Met Gala.

September 2015: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford welcome their first child together.

On September 15, 2015, Carey and Marcus welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Evelyn Grace. The notoriously private couple declined to share any further information about their baby girl's birth.

August 2017: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford announce the arrival of their second baby.

Two years later, Mulligan and Mumford added another member to their family — a baby boy named Wilfred in August 2017.

May 2018: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford attend Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding.

Carey and Marcus were among 600 guests at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's royal wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018. And while they thought they'd easily fly under the radar, Mumford went viral after he was caught yawning during the ceremony.

"We were convinced there were so many absurdly famous people that we were not going to be on camera at all," Carey explained during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! "And then, of course, it finishes, and we’re allowed to turn our phones back on, and we have, like, 15,000 messages going, 'Marcus, you yawned on TV!'"

April 2021: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford make a rare red carpet appearance together at the Oscars.

Mumford supported his wife at the 2021 Academy Awards, where Mulligan was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Promising Young Woman. Carey wore a gold sequined Valentino Haute Couture gown with a midriff cutout, while Marcus wore a black tux with a bowtie.

October 2023: Carey Mulligan reveals she gave birth to her and Marcus Mumford's third baby.

Mulligan revealed that she and Mumford had welcomed her and Mumford's third child during an interview with Vogue. She later let it slip that the baby was a girl, telling Entertainment Tonight at the 2023 Variety Power of Women event that "she's great." Mulligan continued, "Great. Good baby, 10 out of 10 so far."

January 2024: Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford attend the 2024 Golden Globes.

Mulligan and Mumford had a parents' night out at the 2024 Golden Globes. In addition to being one of the best-dressed couples of the evening, Carey was up for the Best Actress award for her role in Mastro.
