Cardi B Wears an Ultra-Rare Vintage Dress to the Hustlers Premiere

Last night at the Hustlers premiere in Los Angeles, Cardi B’s co-stars—including Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, and Lili Reinhart—all opted for fresh contemporary red carpet outfits. As for Cardi? The Bronx-born entertainer went for an ensemble that was almost 25 years old: namely, a figure-hugging Jean Paul Gaultier cyber-inspired dress. An incarnation of the dotted The Fifth Element-style piece was originally worn by Helena Christensen on the Fall 1995 runway, and came with a hood. (For those on the hunt for similar pieces, the look was pulled from cult-adored dealer Pechuga Vintage by Cardi B’s stylist Kollin Karter.) Cardi chose to accessorize the iconic look with oversized Lynn Ban triple-swirl hoops, strappy metallic Jessica Rich sandals, and a very on-trend mini bag. Then, for a dose of star power, the rapper-turned-actress opted for pair of supersized square shades by Fenty.

Like many celebrities, Cardi B has been wearing archival looks on the red carpet for some time now. Back in February, at the Grammys, she wore a surreal blooming flower gown plucked from the Thierry Mugler Fall 1995 Couture show. That same night, she went on to wear two more archival Thierry Mugler looks. As for her venture into Gaultier territory? It's a label beloved by the Kardashian-Jenners, as well as singer Charli XCX, who wore the same futuristic print back in April. With this new appetite for iconic vintage pieces, Jean Paul Gaultier seems easier to wear than other, more delicate, archival looks, and can easily be sported from day to night. It's also very much made for movement, holding up many decades later: just look at Cardi, who brought the look firmly into the 21st century by posting an Instagram story of herself twerking in the dress.
