Cardi B Said the Music Industry is “Not Woke, They’re Scared” by #MeToo

And it's coming this fall.

Cardi B is among the latest musical performers addressing how the #MeToo movement has impacted women in music. As artists including Ciara, Halsey, and Nicki Minaj continue to call for an end to the gender disparity in the industry, Cardi B has questioned the authenticity of some men supporting the cause.

During an interview with Cosmopolitan, the Grammy-nominated artist expressed her concerns regarding the impact of #MeToo on the hip-hop industry. She pointed out how in the past, women who have performed in music videos have spoken out about the sexism they endured and nobody listened. She went on to reference her own experience being in music videos and how she faced sexism and harassment, along with wondering if others would doubt the accounts of other women who experienced similar treatment.

The rapper then added that she doesn't believe some of those in the industry embracing #MeToo and Time's Up are genuine in their support. "These producers and directors, they’re not woke, they’re scared," she said.

Social media has since reacted to the comments, with some remarking on the validity of Cardi's comments. "I wanted to get mad at this, but she's right," one user tweeted. "I was always woke about gender issues and always stood up for women's right, but when #Metoo started I had to completely reevaluate the way I interacted with women. I wasn't scared per say, I was grateful. I needed a wakeup call." Others on social media disagreed with Cardi, and encouraged the performer to look at the past work conducted by women in hip hop. But in the end, clearly there's a conversation being had.
