Cardi B Had the Ultimate Post-Baby Comeback Look on the MTV VMAs Red Carpet
Cardi B’s custom Nicolas Jebran gown proves once and for all that early motherhood can be very sexy.
Cardi B’s not one for a tame red carpet appearance—just take a look at her ultra-dramatic Moschino gown that she wore to the Met Gala earlier this year if you need a reminder. But given that Cardi’s kickoff at the 2018 VMAs tonight is her first public appearance since she gave birth to baby Kulture just over a month ago—and that she’s the most nominated artist, with the chance of going home with 10 different awards—it should perhaps come as no surprise that Cardi wanted to go for something appropriately alluring for her red carpet look.
Cardi donned a custom-made dark fuchsia asymmetrical gown with just a single sleeve—and a very sexy high slit—upon her arrival at the ceremony. “This comeback look represents being powerful, sexy, and most of all being a mother,” says Cardi’s stylist Kollin Carter. “We’ve never really done ‘sexy,’ but I felt like this was the most appropriate time to embrace every curve, especially when people try to strip women of their sex appeal after giving birth.”
The velvety custom creation was made by Lebanese designer Nicolas Jebran, who wanted to imbue Cardi’s look with a sense of royalty—hence the rich velvet material—while keeping things forward-looking. “We wanted to embody Cardi’s ability to break fashion barriers by implementing a modern artistic approach through a dark fuchsia hue and the allure of a high slit,” Jebran says. Cardi is yet again red carpet royalty—this time around, though, little princess Kulture is likely fast asleep at home.
