Carbs and Picasso: Chanel’s Couture Inspiration

Makeup artists and hairstylists rarely set foot backstage without an inspiration, whether it’s Ali McGraw in Love Story, the club kids of the 1980s, or a painting by Degas, there is always someone or something behind the looks they create for the runway. For the hair at Chanel’s spring 2016 couture show, it was a croissant. Sam McKnight, the man who has been behind the hair at Chanel for years, created a twisted croissant-like ‘do using faux hair for models like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Lindsey Wixson.

McKnight shared numerous backstage photos on his Instagram, showing his #chanelcroissants on models as well as a snap of the faux hair in rolls on a table, an image that looked like it could’ve been taken at any local boulangerie.

However, there may have been more than influence at work that led to the show’s beauty look. Lisa Armstrong, the fashion director at the Daily Telegraph, shared an image on her Instagram account of Pablo Picasso’s 1932 sculpture, Head of a Woman, explaining that it was seen on Karl Lagerfeld’s phone and served as a reference for both the hair and the makeup at the show. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux created a dramatic line around eyes that mimicked the outline of the eye on the sculpture. While we love our carbohydrates, but we can get behind a little Picasso too.
