Captain America Has a Lot to Say About the Gender Wage Gap

From Harper's BAZAAR

Captain America may have just found his next nemesis: the gender wage gap.

In the first episode of Chelsea Handler's eponymous Netflix talk show, the host talked to the stars of Captain America: Civil War (over dinner and wine, of course) about everything from the the Marvel blockbuster itself to unequal pay between men and women in show business.

"To instill that change you have to have the dialogue and say it," said Emily VanCamp, who plays Sharon Carter in the film. "Some of these actresses are getting paid loads of money [but] they're allowed to say, 'I want equal pay.'"

Chris Evans, who stars as Steve Rogers (aka Captain America), agreed, urging men to join the conversation too.

"Being a guy, it's a radically different landscape," Evans said, "I think there is a gender gap that is ubiquitous in Hollywood, and I think a lot of times it's hard to even identify."

He added that gender inequality occurs even before money is involved, as the processes of casting and creating discriminates against women too.

"It's not even about the contracts [or pay]. If you look at that project there's probably about nine guy roles and one girl role. So even before you get to the point of money there's already an issue going on underneath," he explained.
