Perched in the breezy hills of Cape Town's Seapoint region sits Mo Mokone’s coastal oasis—her home away from home. The co-founder of Mo’s Crib, a South African-based homeware company, uses the studio apartment as a holiday getaway. Hence, it leans into its beachy surroundings: warm sandy neutrals adorn the lampshades, deep ocean blues swath the rug, and sea-foam white fluffs the bedspread.

Step onto the balcony and you’re welcomed with similar, albeit natural, wonders. On one side, you see Seapoint’s rocky mountains towering overhead, and on the other you see idyllic views of the ocean. As a South African native, Mokone uses this outdoor space as a way to practice Ubuntu— community. It’s where loved ones gather to celebrate and eat. Plus, it’s decorated with traditional crafts, like woven baskets and planters. Ahead, Mokone shares more about the apartment’s coastal charm, penchant for handmade pieces, and favorite furnishings.

I was looking for a holiday home that not only offered a serene escape but also had the potential to be an exquisite Airbnb listing in the captivating city of Seapoint. This location, nestled near the ocean and surrounded by alluring tourist attractions, proved to be the perfect choice.

What immediately appealed to me was the apartment's remarkable proximity to the sea, allowing me to embrace the coastal breeze within a mere five-minute stroll. Despite its cozy studio layout, the space surprised me with a generous outdoor haven, providing an ideal setting for hosting sophisticated gatherings with friends, indulging in serene moments of meditation, or simply savoring a good book amidst nature's embrace.

How would you describe your style and approach to decorating your home?

My style, particularly with this apartment, embraces a modern, chic, and timeless elegance. I aimed for a sophisticated yet comfortable ambiance, featuring high-end furnishings that exude quality and luxury. To imbue the design with natural elements, I added some bespoke touches, such as handwoven baskets and a handwoven outdoor area. These artisanal pieces add a unique charm to the space, bringing in elements of nature that complement the muted and natural color palette.

Who or what are your biggest design inspirations?

My biggest design inspirations come from my travels across the world, inspiring me to include a gallery in the apartment showcasing the most beautiful places I've visited. Additionally, I'm passionate about handmade crafts, which is why I've incorporated handwoven items made from sustainable or recycled materials. These elements symbolize quality, craftsmanship, and a connection with nature, creating a space that reflects my personal style while celebrating the beauty of the world and skilled artisans.

How does your heritage inform your style?

My South African heritage deeply informs my style, drawing inspiration from the rich and diverse culture of the country. I have incorporated various colors, patterns, and textures found in traditional South African arts and crafts, bringing a unique and authentic feeling to my space. The vibrant patterned rug serves as a striking centerpiece, adding character and depth.

Embracing the country’s value of community and gathering, I created inviting spaces conducive to spending quality time with loved ones. The inclusion of an outdoor area allows for gatherings with family during get-togethers, fostering a sense of togetherness and connection.

Reflecting South Africa's natural beauty and landscapes, I also introduced earthy tones through wooden dining tables and chairs, symbolizing the country's breathtaking scenery.

What were the greatest finds in your home? Can you share a story behind any of them?

The greatest finds in my home are undoubtedly the outdoor furniture pieces, all skillfully handmade by Mo's Crib. Taking 28 days to create, these furniture items are crafted from treated cane, resulting in practical and comfortable pieces. Their natural color exudes a calming vibe, perfect for enjoying the outdoor space.

In addition to the outdoor furniture, I also cherish the handwoven baskets, repurposed from recycled PVC plastic. These eco-friendly pieces transform into outdoor-friendly planters, adding both style and sustainability to my home. Their creation from reclaimed PVC water pipe plastic takes an impressive seven hours, reflecting the artisanal craftsmanship and dedication to environmental consciousness.

Both the outdoor furniture and the handwoven baskets carry a meaningful story, representing my support for local artisans and my commitment to incorporating sustainable design into my home.
