Capcom Boss Says Games Are Too Cheap

Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto says game prices are too low, citing bloating development costs for modern video games.

A report from industry analysis company Nikkei (via Kotaku) transcribed the comment, which was made at Tokyo Game Show 2023.

“Development costs are about 100 times higher than during the Famicom era, but software prices have not gone up that much,” said Tsujimoto. “There is also a need to raise wages. Considering the fact that wages are rising in the industry as a whole, I think raising unit prices is a healthy option for business.

“Just because there’s a recession doesn’t mean you won’t go to the movie theater or go to your favorite artist’s concert. High-quality games will continue to sell."

Capcom just launched Street Fighter 6 and the Resident Evil 4 remake, and the company is gearing up for the launch of Dragon's Dogma 2. Elsewhere, Netflix just announced a Devil May Cry anime adaptation.
