Wordle is still a popular pandemic pastime, but the free online word game can only be played once a day with just six guesses at the five-letter word. So, what is a Wordle whiz to do when they finish their daily puzzle? Fear not, because there is a plethora of free online games like Wordle that are just as entertaining, with fun added challenges.

Since the strategic web-puzzle was released by software engineer Josh Wardle in October 2021, the trending game has not only been bought by the New York Times for a seven figure sum, but has also prompted fans to make their own versions. Many follow the same rules as Wordle, with tiles turning green when you have the right letter in the right spot, yellow when you have a correct letter but in the wrong spot, and gray when your guess is not in the puzzle at all. But these games add interesting twists such using numbers instead of words, offering unlimited round of play, and even having fun backdrops to look at while you contemplate your next guess.

If you are still on the Wordle bandwagon but want to play in your native language or the language you are currently learning, Wordle is also available in various languages including Spanish, Japanese, Italian, German, Portuguese, Chinese, and French.

The options are truly endless, but here are the 12 best games like Wordle that are available to play online for free. There is sure to be one (or more!) for you that caters to your preferred difficulty level and interests.

Wordle Archive

This isn't a new game, but it is an archive of every Wordle to date. So if you joined the Wordle craze late in the game, you can go right back to the beginning of it all and play the very first Wordle onward, or you could even retry past Wordles to guess the word in fewer tries. The archive is a great way to improve your performance and experiment with different strategies.

Wordle Unlimited

Similarly to the above archive, Wordle Unlimited follows the same rules as the original version with a slight upgrade: Now you can play as many rounds without waiting 24 hours for the next word. Another great perk of the Unlimited version is that you can create your own word and send the challenge to your friends. So, if you have become a Wordle whiz, the Unlimited version gives you endless hours of word puzzles that you can share with fellow enthusiasts.

Hello wordl

Another offshoot of the original, hello wordl, also gives players an unlimited supply of five-letter words to try to guess within six tries. If one word a day just isn't enough, hello wordl will allow you to continue playing after the daily word. You can't send personalized challenges to friends like with Wordle Unlimited, but it's still a great way to improve your skills.

Dordle

Maybe after days (or weeks) of playing Wordle and perfecting your personal strategy, you want to try something new and even more challenging. Enter: Dordle. Essentially two Wordle boards side by side, Dordle follows the same rules and color coding as Wordle with the added challenge of guessing two words rather than one within the same number of tries. You can start by playing the daily Dordle, or try the Unlimited version if you want extra practice.

Crosswordle

Perhaps Wordle has become your new Sunday morning routine. But maybe you miss sipping your coffee while filling out that day's crossword puzzle. Crosswordle is the best of both worlds, or should we say the best of both wordles. The game is like a mini crossword puzzle, set up with two intersecting five-letter words. Your tiles will turn green, yellow, or gray based on your guesses, and just like Wordle, there is only one puzzle released each day. But unlike Wordle, you have unlimited tries and can even create your own crosswordle to send to friends or try out "Hard mode."

Absurdle

If you are guessing the Wordle word everyday within one or two guesses, then level up with the free online game Absurdle. Don't be fooled: You may have unlimited guesses, but Absurdle changes the potential target word with each guess in proactive attempts to beat you. The setup is similar to Wordle, in that tiles turn yellow, green, and gray to give you hints at the secret word. But while Wordle is "charming," Absurdle is "adversarial." You can read the full instructions here, as well as scroll through FAQs to help you win.

WordGuessr

WordGuessr is a great option for those who are just starting out with Wordle and want a web game that offers more flexibility. Wordle rules still apply, in terms of the number of guesses you get, but you can adjust the length of the secret word. You can guess a three-letter, four-letter, five-letter, six-letter, or seven-letter world, or go wild with a random word or the sharable challenge game. Another great perk to this version is that players can play more than once; the creator's wife is even quoted on the homepage saying, "Practice makes 'Pretty Good.'"

Primel

If numbers are the name of your game, then you have to try the online math game Primel. Rather than guess a six-letter word, the goal of Primel is to guess a five-digit prime number in just six tries. You might be thinking that with fewer options as guesses (10 numbers rather than 26 letters), Primel is an easier web-game than Wordle, but remember: Only prime numbers are accepted as guesses. This game is all about mathematics, namely knowing a fair amount of prime numbers.

Nerdle

Nerdle is another web game to try if you prefer numbers to words. Rather than guess a prime number, the goal in Nerdle is to guess a (correct) calculation that follows standard order of operations. Your guess can include any digit from zero to nine, as well as one or more of the four operation signs. Each guess does need to include the equals sign and only have one number after said sign, but other than that the possibilities are pretty much limitless. Your tile will turn green if the number or sign is correct and in the right spot, purple if it is the right number or sign but in the wrong spot, and black if your guess is wrong on both counts. Nerdle can definitely be challenging, but it's also a great way for kids to practice their math (just as Wordle is a great way to expand their vocabulary).

Wheeldle

Speaking of kid-friendly online games, Wheeldle puts a fun spin on the original Wordle game with a nostalgic background behind the tiles. The rules are exactly the same as Wordle, but now you can guess the secret five-letter word while looking at a fun background reminiscent of an old school video game. Whether your kids are Nintendo fans, or you want to take a trip down memory lane yourself, Wheeldle has you covered.

Taylordle

The Wordle sensation has prompted a wave of creativity when it comes to online games. If you are a fan of themed games, or a particular pop-country music star, then Taylordle has been Taylored just for you. Similar to Wordle, you have six tries to guess a five-letter word, but this time it has to be specific to Taylor Swift, from album names to big career moments. Your tiles will still turn green, yellow, or gray based off your guesses, and you can even check your stats to see your success rate and current streak. Even if you aren't a Swift fan, brainstorming five-letter words under a particular theme is a challenge for anyone. But of course, Swifties in particular will especially love this Wordle iteration.

Subwaydle

If you are bored of guessing five-letter words (or numbers), then try guessing NYC subway routes instead with Subwaydle. Inspired by Wordle and New York Transit Museum Trivia Nights, Subwaydle follows similar rules to Wordle with a very unique twist. Players have six tries to guess a valid subway trip involving three different trains. After each guess, the colors of your tiles will give you hints about the secret route. There are a few more rules to keep in mind when playing, though: You can't travel to a station more than once and you can only make transfers when the lines cross. The weekday puzzles are based on midday schedules, while weekend puzzles follow weekend schedules. And similarly to Taylordle, you can check your stats with each game played.
