Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his longtime wife Sophie Grégoire are separating.

The former couple announced on social media this week, sharing the same statement to their respective Instagram accounts on Wednesday, Aug. 2.

Trudeau, 52, posted the message first in English, and then one in French, as he told his followers, "Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate."

"As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build," he continued, adding. "For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy."

"Thank you," the message concluded.

Trudeau—who took office in 2015—has been married to Grégoire, 48, for 18 years following their 2005 nuptials. They share three children together: sons Xavier, 15, and Hadrien, 9, as well as a daughter, Ella-Grace, 14.

Following Trudeau and Grégoire's personal announcements, the Canadian Prime Minister's office confirmed the news to PEOPLE, revealing in a statement that the pair have "signed a legal separation agreement."

"They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward," the statement continued. "They remain a close family and Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment."

The statement also noted that "Both parents will be a constant presence in their children's lives" and that "Canadians can expect to often see the family together."

The family is even scheduled to be on vacation together beginning next week.
