Canadian Animal Shelter Launches Awesome Classroom Guinea Pig Program
Every classroom should do this!
A Canadian school in New Brunswick recently rolled out a new program with the hope of helping students while also reducing the number of pet surrenders. This idea has been a growing trend in Canada, according to a video posted by Global News. The new program, called The PAW Pal Academy, will connect classrooms to guinea pigs.
The classrooms will foster a guinea pig that was surrendered to a local shelter for a few months at a time. Teachers won’t feel obligated to adopt these fur babies and they won’t feel like it’s a long-term responsibility since it would only be temporary. But not only would a classroom pet bring so much happiness to the students, but it would also teach the kids. Watch the video to learn more!
Wow! This is seriously so cool! We’d go back to school just so we could have a classroom pet. LOL! We love that the program benefits everyone involved. This could help with the overcrowding at the shelters. Plus, the guinea pigs would get tons of social time.
As for the students, this will give them great practice in a variety of topics. Stacey Picard, the social media manager for People for Animal Wellbeing in New Brunswick, told Global News that students can fundraise and plan a budget to care for the guinea pig. “So, it is really good for math skills and planning arts because they can also build some little cubbies for them because guinea pigs love hiding,” added Picard. We LOVE that!
“I think animals in schools are amazing. I would completely be up for that and be a guinea pig for that project,” said Principal Christa Martin in the Global News article. We’d gladly test out the waters too if we were a school. We think this is a win-win for everyone, and every pet, involved!
