The 'New Canadian Airforce' Was One Of The Most Influential Groups In Skiing History

When it comes to influential ski crews, the conversation has to include the New Canadian Airforce (NCAF), a squad of Canadian shredders that dominated the earlier freeskiing scene.

Why? I could wax lyrically, or I could do you one better and instead recommend that you check out this classic Matchstick Productions edit featuring the NCAF. Let's start with the latter.

The NCAF consisted of freeskiing pioneers like Mike Douglas, JF Cusson, Philou Poirier, Vincent Dorion, and JP Auclair, who led the charge on popularizing freestyle and terrain park skiing.

Part of the NCAF's efforts included partnering with Salomon to produce the legendary 1080 in the late 1990s, one of the first twin-tip skis designed for freeskiing and switch riding.

To learn more about the story of the 1080 and the NCAF, tune in below.

As noted in this video, we lost JP Auclair in 2014 after a tragic avalanche incident. His memory lives on, though, in a series of annual memorial events hosted at mountains throughout North America.

These gatherings are big freestyle skiing parties featuring jumps, jibs, and crowds of pros honoring JP by doing what they do best: skiing.

The 2023 JP Auclair Memorial was held at Woodward Park City, Utah, capping off a historically deep season with a sunny day of freestyle maneuvers and remembrance.
