Who is Camille Vasquez? Meet the attorney from 'Depp v. Heard'

It was the legal case that created a media storm and lawyer Camille Vasquez was right at the center of it.

Vasquez was the attorney that represented superstar actor Johnny Depp in his $50 million defamation suit against his ex-wife, Aquaman actress Amber Heard, a much-publicized trial that serves as the subject of Netflix's latest true-crime documentary, Depp v. Heard, a three-parter that premiered on the streamer on Wednesday, August 16.

Given the big Hollywood names involved and the sensitive nature of the case—which dealt with tough, vital topics such as domestic and sexual violence, the #MeToo movement and women's rights—all eyes were on Vasquez and the rest of the legal teams representing both Heard and Depp in the case.

But what do we know about Camille Vasquez and what does she think about the Netflix docuseries?

Who is Camille Vasquez from Depp v. Heard?

Camille Vasquez is a 39-year-old, California-born attorney best known for representing actor Johnny Depp in the defamation case that he brought against his ex-wife Amber Heard. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in communication and political science, before attending Southwestern Law School in 2010.

She joined the law firm Brown Rudnick in 2018 and is currently a partner in the firm's Litigation & Arbitration Practice Group.

Prior to representing Depp in the defamation suit against Heard—during which the jury ruled in favor of her client, awarding him $15 million and $2 million to Heard on account of her counterclaim—Vasquez represented the Pirates of the Caribbean actor in cases against his former attorney Jake Bloom and his former business manager Joel Mandel.

Despite romantic rumors linking Vasquez with her client, the attorney dismissed any talk of a relationship—she was reportedly dating Edward Owen, a WeWork executive, at the time and Depp was allegedly dating another lawyer entirely,  Joelle Rich. (Rich was not part of the legal team that defended him in the defamation case, FYI.)

Since the Depp v. Heard trial, Vasquez has been hired by NBC News as a legal analyst. "I knew my life had changed," she told People, "but I could never have dreamed it would be this great, that I would be able to represent some of the most interesting, wonderful clients that I have the privilege of representing."

"It was fascinating, just to see the way that [director Emma Cooper] put together that docuseries, I found it really interesting," Vasquez told Access Hollywood's Zuri Hall in an August interview. "She utilized the court testimony in a way that told a really compelling truthful account of what took place inside those four walls in Virginia,"

"While we were there inside doing our job, we didn't really understand the impact this case was having on social media all over the world," she continued. "Towards the end, we started getting messages or people sending us things but really, for the most part, we had no idea that there was this media storm brewing outside...I'm grateful that we weren't aware at the time because we did have a job to do."

The three-part Depp v. Heard docuseries is available to stream on Netflix beginning Wednesday, August 16.
