There has been much speculation about what members of the royal family really think about their portrayals in The Crown, and its much-discussed intertwining of fact and fiction. But today, a member of the royal family came face to face with their on-screen “alter-ego” when Camilla met Camilla at Clarence House.

The Duchess of Cornwall invited actress Emerald Fennell to an International Women’s Day reception at her London residence. And despite the fact that Emerald later admitted she was fleetingly worried that she might be “thrown in the Tower,” the meeting seemed to delight the two women as much as it will fans of the Netflix drama.

“It was absolutely delightful, she is such an impressive person,” Emerald told reporters afterwards, adding that she thought Camilla had “been in the spotlight for a long time and has always weathered it with a lot of grace and good humor.” Admitting that it was “very strange” to be in Clarence house for the first time, Emerald joked, “I was nervous I might be throw in the Tower. But so far so good.”

For her part, Camilla even referred to Emerald in her speech, telling those assembled, “It’s very reassuring to know that if I should fall off my perch at any moment, my fictional alter-ego is here to take over. So Emerald, be prepared!” What the two women talked about, however, looks set to remain a royal secret, with Emerald declining to disclose what they discussed or what the Duchess said to her. “I’m going to be vey discreet,” she said. “Loose lips sink ships.”

What also looks set to remain a mystery is exactly what Camilla thinks about her portrayal on The Crown. The fact that she invited Emerald and posed for a photograph with her suggests that she is good-humored about the drama. However, when series four of the program aired in November 2020, Clarence House was forced to turn off the comments on their social media after Charles and Camilla were trolled.

Emerald, who recently directed the film Promising Young Women about sexual violence, was among many high-profile women mingling at the event today. Other guests included former British Prime Minister Theresa May MP and former Spice Girl Mel B, who is patron of charity Women’s Aid. Camilla was hosting the reception in her capacity as President of charity Women of the World Festival, which celebrates women, girls and non-binary people.

In her speech to those assembled, Camilla said, “There remain vast strides to be made —on the current trajectory, we will need more than 135 years to close the gender gap worldwide—but let us take a moment to thank the women and men who have, for decades, fought hard for justice and equality.”
