Camila Mendes Just Tried Meghan Markle’s Acai Bowl Recipe And She Has Thoughts

From Women's Health

Heading into her fourth year on the CW series Riverdale, Camila Mendes—who plays Veronica Lodge and is on the cover of the October 2019 issue of Women's Health—is not afraid to speak her mind on screen or off. And that strong opinion just so happens to extend to açaí bowls. (Camila also has no trouble pronouncing the superfood, it's "ah-sah-yee," in case you were wondering.)

Like the actress, the star ingredient in these bowls, açaí berries, hails from Brazil. And the actress was eager to dive spoon first into five different fruity bowls, and put them to the test for Women's Health.

As she made her way along the bowl lineup, it got competitive real quick. "Let's see if she can stand the Camila Mendes test," she said while taking a close look at the bowl made with Meghan Markle's recipe. "This is good, it's actually not too sweet. Sometimes açaí bowls are so sweet you can't even eat it. I'm a fan."

Next up was the only bowl that stood a chance of beating the Duchess's: "Now we have Gwyneth Paltrow's celebrity recipe. This one's got banana and some nutty things. It's very healthy and it's got that earthy taste."

After the celeb recipes, the other bowls just couldn't compare. "I mean it's really good. It's really sweet, it's more like a dessert," Camila said about the Jamba Juice bowl.

But which one was the best açaí bowl of them all? "The winner is definitely one of the celeb ones," she said, contemplating her choices. Camila took another bite from her fave bowls and smacked her lips before pronouncing Gwyneth Paltrow's recipe the winner.

Gwyneth Paltrow's açaí bowl

Ingredients:

  • Toasted seed mix (1 tbsp. pumpkin seeds, 1 tbsp. buckwheat groats, 1 tbsp. flaxseed, 1 tsp. hemp seeds, ½ tsp. coconut oil, one pinch kosher salt, ½ tsp. honey)

  • 1 (3.5-ounce) frozen açaí pack

  • 1 banana, cut in half

  • 2 tbsp. coconut water

  • 1 tbsp. coconut milk (optional)

  • 1 tbsp. coconut flakes

  • 2 tbsp. blueberries

  • 1 tbsp. bee pollen

  • Manuka honey, optional

Directions:

  1. To prepare the toasted seed mix, heat a small sauté pan over medium heat.

  2. Add all the ingredients except the honey to the pan. Cook, stirring occasionally until nicely toasted, about 2 minutes.

  3. Then, add the honey, turn off the heat, and stir until all ingredients combine. Transfer the seed mix to a plate to cool and spread out to crisp up. Once cool, break it up into little pieces using fingers.

  4. For the smoothie base, blend the açaí pack, half of the banana, coconut water, and coconut milk until smooth.

  5. Then, transfer the mixture to a bowl and top with sliced banana, 2 tbsp. of the toasted seed mix, coconut flakes, blueberries, bee pollen, and optional drizzle of manuka honey.
