We have tried with exhausted efforts and hearts to keep this group alive as the five of us, and we want it to be very clear that unfortunately, those efforts were not mutual."

Industry insiders claimed that Cabello made it no secret that she planned on leaving, and that her solo album had been in the works for quite some time before she announced her exit. For her part, Cabello told The New York Times that she had wanted to remain in the group while also exploring solo opportunities to expand her artistic horizons and write songs with other artists, but that she wasn't allowed to do so. "It became clear that it was not possible to do solo stuff and be in the group at the same time," she said.
