Broke? Oh nah nah!

Talk about a Cinderella story! In less than a decade, singer (and now actress and The Voice judge!) Camila Cabello has skyrocketed from a rocky showbiz start as an X Factor reject to a girl group star to a certified solo household name—with an equally escalating net worth to match. It's a meteoric rise that the 25-year-old can be proud of, even as she insists that mega-fame and fortune are not part of the fairytale ending she wants for herself.

"I don't live my life like a pop star. That is what I do, but not what I am," Cabello said in 2018. "I don't isolate myself in an untouchable bubble, because that's where things get lonely, fragile and dishonest... I want to stay away from anything that makes me think I can't live my life the way everybody else does."

Of course, not everybody else has amassed a net worth like Cabello, and her cash flow will surely only grow now that she's officially segued into acting with the starring role in Amazon Prime's Cinderella remake and her refreshing turn as a coach on season 22 of The Voice.

Born Karla Camila Cabello Estrabao in Havana, Cuba—the city that would later inspire her biggest hit song—Cabello and her family moved back and forth between East Havana and Mexico City until settling in Miami when she was 6 years old.

Cabello left high school in her freshman year to pursue music and landed on The X Factor in 2012. Cabello's audition never aired because the network couldn't secure the rights to Aretha Franklin's "Respect," and Cabello was initially eliminated during the boot camp rounds of the competition—until she was invited to join Lauren JaureguiDinah JaneAlly Brooke and Normani Kordei to form Fifth Harmony. The group came in third place on the show, but went on to become one of the most successful acts to ever emerge from the U.S. version of the competition series.

After a string of successes as a featured artist (as well as a well-documented friendship with Taylor Swift) Cabello left Fifth Harmony in 2016 to pursue a solo career full time.

How much did Camila Cabello earn from "Havana?"

One of her biggest hit singles, "Havana" put Cabello on the map as a musical force to be reckoned with after she left Fifth Harmony to go solo. How much did Camila Cabello make with Fifth Harmony?

Before quitting the group, Cabello is estimated to have been worth $3.5 million from her work with Fifth Harmony.

However, it's worth noting that one of Cabello's Fifth Harmony bandmates, Lauren Jauregui, expressed frustration with the group's workload in relation to their income.

In an audio clip that leaked just days after Cabello's exit was announced, Jauregui cried to fellow member Ally Brooke, "They are making decisions on a regular basis to f**k us over, to make us literal slaves, like literally slaves, Ally. We're doing f***ing labor every day and we see nothing." She also told Billboard in May 2016, "They sell you this present of rainbows and butterflies, and as a 16-year-old that's what I bought. It's why I did X Factor and why I ended up in a group. But then you're working so hard, so young."

Additionally, reality competition show record deals are often not great for artists. Attorney Debra White, who negotiates contracts for The Voice contestants, explained to Billboard, "The standard contract is worse than a 360 nightmare [because the company] gets to be the record company, the publisher, the manager, they have a piece of touring and merchandise."

Why did Camila Cabello leave Fifth Harmony?

Cabello left Fifth Harmony in late 2016, and a number of reasons went into her decision.

Before her exit, Cabello experienced success as a featured artist on other songs, including "I Know What You Did Last Summer" by her then-future and now ex-boyfriend Shawn Mendes in early 2016, as well as Machine Gun Kelly's "Bad Things" in December of that year.

She also hinted that being in a group stifled her creativity a bit. The members of Fifth Harmony lamented that they didn't write any songs on their 7/27 album, which was a bummer for Cabello especially.

"Fifth Harmony is amazing, that we can all come from different places and have different music tastes and have different ideas of what music we would like to make but all come together to be like, 'OK, this is our sound,'" she admitted to Billboard in February 2016. "But at the end of the day, you feel kind of stifled when you can't completely express who you are without any compromises."

The fellow members of Fifth Harmony announced Cabello's exit in December 2016 and claimed that the decision was announced via Cabello's team.

"After four and a half years of being together, we have been informed via her representatives that Camila has decided to leave Fifth Harmony," the group tweeted. "We wish her well."

In a follow-up statement, the group alleged that they made every effort to keep her in the fold, but that she wasn't interested. "Over the past several months, we have consistently made every effort to sit down and discuss the future of Fifth Harmony with Camila. We have spent the past year and a half (since her initial solo endeavor) trying to communicate to her and her team all of the reasons why we felt Fifth Harmony deserved at least one more album of her time, given the success of this past year that we'd all worked so hard for," the group said in a statement on Twitter.

"We called for group meetings which she refused, we asked L.A. Reid and the label to step in and try to set meetings, which again, she refused," the statement continued. "We even went as far as group counseling which she did not show up to. So no, after months of rejection from her and her team, these supposed lengthy conversations in fact never happened, although we pleaded. We have tried with exhausted efforts and hearts to keep this group alive as the five of us, and we want it to be very clear that unfortunately, those efforts were not mutual."

Industry insiders claimed that Cabello made it no secret that she planned on leaving, and that her solo album had been in the works for quite some time before she announced her exit. For her part, Cabello told The New York Times that she had wanted to remain in the group while also exploring solo opportunities to expand her artistic horizons and write songs with other artists, but that she wasn't allowed to do so. "It became clear that it was not possible to do solo stuff and be in the group at the same time," she said. "If anyone wants to explore their individuality, it’s not right for people to tell you no."

Does Camila Cabello write her own music?

While Cabello wasn't a credited songwriter on any of her work with Fifth Harmony, she has penned her solo hits, including her smash "Havana," which was the most-streamed song of 2018 on Spotify and her first No. 1 hit.

She had songwriting credits for every track on her debut album, Camila, and her follow-up, Romance. She also has co-writing credits on "Bad Things," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "Señorita" (with Mendes), "Beautiful" (with Bazzi), "Crown" (with Grey), "Hey Ma" (with Pitbull and J. Balvin) and "South of the Border" with Ed Sheeran.
