Camila Cabello wants fans to stop causing “more pain” by shipping her and Shawn Mendes amid breakup

“Shipping”—the desire to see two of your favorite celebs or fictional characters fall for each other—can be a dangerous game. Sometimes the line between fiction and reality blurs, and fans forget that the celebrities involved are real people with real lives and real emotions. (Just take the Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper rumors.) Now, Camila Cabello is speaking out about how some fans “shipping” her and collaborator Shawn Mendes has been causing her pain after her breakup with Matthew Hussey.

For those who aren’t up to date on the situation, Cabello and Mendes, who came up in the music industry together, shot a super-sexy music video for their song “Señorita.” They salsa dance, they exchange steamy glances, Mendes rides a motorcycle and is all of the sudden shirtless—it’s intense. And their performances in the music video were good enough to convince their fans that there is something going on between them IRL.

So when Cabello officially called things off with boyfriend Hussey amid the Mendes rumors, some people went so far as to start bullying Hussey on Twitter. Not cool, guys.

Things got so bad that Cabello was forced to plead to her fans to stop via her Instagram Stories.

“To my fans, if you really love me, please do not send people I love and care about hateful things,” she wrote. “You doing that really hurts me, and it’s so unnecessary and heavy and damaging to add more pain to pain. There’s a real person behind your tweets. You spamming them with hateful, insensitive things is really not funny, is causing all of us pain, and doesn’t all reflect the values I talk about.”

“Please be kind and compassionate and sensitive and respectful,” she continued. “I know you love me, but anyone that’s doing that is really not even respecting the sacred things in my life. The people I love and care about is one of them. I would really appreciate it if you would delete any mean comments you’ve sent, and please be kind by leaving it alone.”
