If you were left with your jaw on the ground following the Sweet Magnolias season 2 finale, you are certainly in good company. The hit Netflix show ended with a major cliff hanger that left fans with more questions than answers. Is Maddie okay? Why is Cal being arrested? What's going to happen to both of them?

Well, after a long wait, season 3 finally dropped on the streamer on July 20, and the story picks up right where season 2 left off. That also means you might need a refresher on what went down during that infamous season 2 finale. That scene, understandably, sets the stage for the crux of season 3's drama.

ICYDK, this Netflix show is based on a book series by Sherryl Wood of the same name and follow the lives of three best friends: Helen, Maddie, and Dana Sue. The women, who live in Serenity, North Carolina, go through life's ups and downs together, and there's lots of fun romance storylines, too. During season 1, Maddie starts a relationship with a former MLB player-turned-baseball coach named Cal Maddox, and, well, things take off from there.

What happens in the season 2 finale?

At the end of season 2 (which, by the way, came out almost a year and a half ago), things are not looking great for Cal.

Cal ends up losing his coaching job. Also noteworthy is the revelation that he had a bad injury during his baseball career that resulted in some anger management issues, leading to an old arrest for assault and battery.

This all comes to a head in the finale, when Cal’s temper boils over during a heated exchange at Sullivan’s, the local restaurant, per Screenrant.

What did Cal do?

Cal was, admittedly, not having the best day when he rolled into the restaurant. And when he runs into an overly excited fan (whom viewers meet earlier in season 2), the two end up in a fistfight.

Wondering what got him *that* upset? It’s pretty straightforward: The man is a big fan of Cal's and takes his firing personally. He storms into Sullivan's, where Cal and Maddie are hanging, and starts shouting about how he will fight people to help Cal get his job back, becoming increasingly more erratic, per Screenrant.

When the man starts to shout at Maddie, Cal loses it and punches him. Dana Sue calls the police, who arrive as Cal has the man pinned to the ground. The police intervene and arrest Cal, even though Stu caused the disturbance in the first place.

Who was the man that Cal punched?

The guy’s name is Stu, and he has become obsessed with Cal after they bonded at a black-tie charity event. At the event, the men talk about the fact that they’ve both lost their fathers. In fact, Stu tells Cal that he and his dad went to see him play right before his dad got sick.

The arrest affects his relationship with Maddie during season 3.

Things are already rocky with the couple before he gets arrested. So going to jail certainly doesn't help things. Luckily, Cal is bailed out, and is greeted by supportive friends who say they’ll stick by his side as he navigates his anger issues. Plus, Stu decides not to testify against Cal's assault in court, which means the charges can be dropped.

While Cal's relationship with Maddie will certainly take some work, the two say that they are going to work together to set boundaries and get Cal back on the right track.
