'When Calls the Heart' Creator Urges Fans to "Hang in There" After Last Night's Episode

From Good Housekeeping

  • The cast of When Calls the Heart has promised that Elizabeth (played by Erin Krakow) will finally make a decision about her love life toward the end of season 8.

  • In the second episode of the season, Nathan (played by Kevin McGarry) professed his love to Elizabeth.

  • Fans seem to think Elizabeth's reaction shows that her mind is already made up.

Hearties, we're inching our way toward Elizabeth's big decision.

It's been a slow crawl up until this point, but Sunday's episode titled "Honestly, Elizabeth" was a major step in the right direction. At the end of the latest When Calls the Heart episode, Nathan starts telling Elizabeth about the plot of land he just checked out, but Elizabeth cuts him off, confessing that she knows he wants to be more than just friends. "I know that you feel the same way that I do," he responds.

Although she doesn't deny her feelings, Elizabeth admits that she can't be with him, especially after the shooting scare: "You want more than I can give you. It would just hurt too much if I lost you the way I lost Jack." Without skipping a beat, Nathan promises Elizabeth that he'll do whatever it takes to be with her, even if it means quitting his job as a Mountie. Still, that's not enough for Elizabeth. Just as she's about to ride away on her horse, Nathan professes his love: "Elizabeth, I'm in love with you. Elizabeth, I love you."

Although viewers still have mixed opinions on who Elizabeth should pick, many agreed that it was show's "best scene yet." Erin Krakow, who plays Elizabeth, pointed out the obvious: "That was heartbreaking," she wrote on Twitter. Kevin McGarry, who plays Nathan, took a more comedic route by posting a GIF along with the timestamp of the moment when Elizabeth started crying as she rode off into the distance.

This moment was especially heartbreaking for #TeamLucas fans. Although there are some hopefuls who think that she'll still go for Lucas since he's a safer choice, others recognize that the love between Elizabeth and Nathan — even if Elizabeth doesn't.

By the looks of Twitter, several Hearties are convinced that Elizabeth will come around to Nathan since it would be far more powerful to watch her overcome her fears instead of running away from them.

The show's creator Brian Bird chimed in shortly after the episode ended, explaining that the horse ride was a full-circle moment for Elizabeth. When Elizabeth started crying on the horse, it took her "right back to where she was in the moments after Jack's death." (FYI: Following Jack's shocking death in the season 5 finale, Elizabeth takes his horse for a ride and reflects on all of their memories together.)

Then he told fans to "hang in there" after this "emotional whiplash" because there is even more drama in the weeks ahead.

It's possible that Bird is teasing Lucas' response to this whole situation. In a post-show interview with ET, Chris McNally revealed that his character has a few tricks up his sleeve to win over Elizabeth: "There's a few moments, a few events that Lucas tries to orchestrate and… you see Lucas open up a little bit and show a bit of a sense of vulnerability that you maybe haven't seen before."

All of this means that Lucas is still in the running for Elizabeth's heart. Of course, Elizabeth is still the one who calls the shots and right now, she is "trying to figure out which guy really lit her heart on fire, who was it that was going to make her feel that great love again," as Krakow explained to TV Insider. Whatever you do, don't get too comfortable because Krakow previously mentioned that Elizabeth won't make a decision until the very end of the season.
