'When Calls the Heart' Creator Shares Impassioned Letter on Twitter for Frustrated Fans

Hearties, it's officially time to open up your heart.

At the very end of the season 8 finale, Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) finally decided that Lucas (Chris McNally) calls her heart. At first, Hearties were thrilled that the love triangle was finally behind them — and then reality set in. In the days to follow, many fans voiced their frustrations on social media, even threatening to stop watching When Calls the Heart altogether since Nathan (Kevin McGarry) is out the picture. (FYI, he's not.)

It didn't take long for the show's cast and writers to chime in. Chris was one of the first cast members to address the pushback, saying that he'll miss the Hearties who choose to stop watching, but is "looking forward to shooting it for those who will." Paul Greene, who plays Carson, shared a similar message on Twitter: "As always, stay open & kind as I know u [sic] all are in your hearts," he wrote. Then there was the show's creator and executive producer Brian Bird, who reassured fans that everyone — Erin, Chris and Kevin included — agrees that "this was the right and best choice for future of the show."

The animosity died down while the show was on hiatus, but as expected, it picked back up right before the season 9 premiere. In light of this, the show's creator posted a letter to all Hearties — those who are happy for Lucas and Elizabeth, as well as those who aren't. "We have all been through many challenges over the years — plot twists both on the show and in real life, and we haven't always seen eye to eye on everything, but I think now is a good time for a reset. A do-over," he wrote on Twitter.

That said, he asked Hearties to redirect their passion from last season's drama to the excitement of what lies ahead. "What I know about the true Hearties community is that you believe in agreeing to disagree without being disagreeable," he continued.

Dozens of fans applauded Brian for his heartfelt message. "I have been watching since day 1, and my excitement for this season is higher than I can ever remember (and that’s saying something ). Thank you for this show and your words. Here’s hoping and praying for MANY more seasons of the best show on TV," one loyal viewer wrote.

They may be onto something: The season 9 premiere debuted with record ratings, proving that all the online chatter isn't enough to take fans away from Hope Valley just yet. So, how about season 10 then?
