Calling All Prince Philip Look-Alikes! Paul Bettany Is Not Replacing Matt Smith in ‘The Crown’

Just when we were warming up to the idea of a new Prince Philip, Paul Bettany officially bowed out of negotiations to portray the royal in seasons three and four of The Crown.

Bettany was expected to replace Matt Smith, who played the prince in the show’s first two seasons, but opted out due to the massive (eight months each year) time commitment the role requires.

The British actor already has two blockbusters—Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story—premiering this summer, so unless cloning is an option, we can understand his reason for politely declining the offer.

Guess it’s time to gather the corgis and go back to the royal drawing board…
