California Town Mourns the Loss of Famous 'Klepto Kitty' Who Stole Over 1000 Items

Dusty and his shenanigans will be greatly missed.

San Mateo, California is remembering one very special feline. Dusty the 'Klepto Kitty' was known around town for his nighttime thievery, but now everyone is missing this literal cat burglar.

The 17-year-old cat had collected over 1000 items for his paw-rents, Jean Chu and James Coleman, since beginning his shenanigans over a decade ago. He became famous across the globe for the random items he stole from his neighbors, reports ABC7, but he also stole the hearts of everyone who heard of him.

Dusty left quite a legacy behind, that's for sure. We can't imagine how heartbroken his family must be to say goodbye, but hopefully, they find comfort and joy in all the shared memories. And all the gifts he left them with!

"It's been hard," Dusty's mom told ABC7. "You kind of still expect to see him walk in and where he slept. But we'll get through it." We're sure the loss will sting less as the days go by, but Dusty's memory will never fade--especially when there are so many items, videos, and news articles to remember him by.

In fact, it was ABC's reporter who first busted the cat. Journalist Vic Lee had the honor of writing about the soon-to-be-famous burglar back in 2011, and the feline's fame rose from there. Jay Leno flew Dusty and his family to New York, and Animal Planet set up cameras to record his nightly adventures. The videos were even included as a special feature on the Puss in Boots DVD!

As hard as it might be to say goodbye, there's no doubt that Dusty lived his 17 years to the fullest. His family has the loot to prove it!
