California Ski Resort Hits Six Feet Of Snow In January

Mammoth Mountain, California, dropped some exciting news yesterday: "We just tallied 6 FEET of snow in the month of January!"

The announcement was shared on Instagram alongside some GoPro footage of skier Julian Leeds taking advantage of the very welcome snowy reset.

It was a much-needed turnaround for Mammoth. The Californian resort only saw 26 inches of snow between November and December this winter. In comparison, those months brought 177 inches to Mammoth during last winter's historic season.

Despite the slow start, Mammoth is now almost 100% open. The resort's website currently reports that 165 of its 176 trails are open.

According to NOAA, conditions should be dry and relatively balmy at Mammoth for the next few days. Still, things could get soggy and snowy in California at the start of next month, per a hazard outlook from the National Weather Service.

Last winter, Mammoth smashed its snowfall record with 900 inches at the summit and 700 inches at the base. This season, beating that record isn't looking feasible unless something truly dramatic happens.

Yet, the lack of massive, record-setting storms this season isn't necessarily worth fretting over. "People expecting last year's historic snowfall like that was normal," wrote a Mammoth fan below the resort's January 2024 Instagram announcement. "This is normal n we love it."

I'm sure all the plow drivers, lifties, and patrollers would agree—while last winter was one for the books, it also meant burning a lot of midnight oil.
