California Neighborhood Woken Up in the Middle of the Night to an Escaped Herd of Animals

There are few things that irritate me more than being woken up earlier than necessary. Whether it's an incorrectly set alarm or a surprise visit from my dog in the middle of the night, interrupted sleep isn't my vibe. Then again, who would enjoy waking up at 3 a.m.?

The residents of the quiet Ring Mtn. neighborhood in Corte Madera, California, are definitely on the same page as I am. They weren't thrilled to wake up to a massive herd of escaped animals roaming the streets! As cute as the escape artists were, their late August heist caused quite a stir.

One of the sleepy neighbors, Kristen Slowe, shared Nest camera footage with ABC7 News. I was shocked to see just how many animals there were!

There has to be hundreds of goats in that video! If I looked out of my window to see that in the middle of the night, I'd probably think I was still dreaming. Then again, I could totally use the escaped herd to count goats until I'm tired enough to go back to sleep!

These sneaky and smart goats escaped their Corte Madera enclosure around 2:40 a.m. on the night of the journey. They wandered the Bay Area neighborhood for a while--making plenty of noise as they went-- before a herder and herding dog helped wrangle the animals back into their enclosure.

But why were there hundreds of goats in a Bay Area city, you ask? These animals are popular fire prevention tools around Northern California! They're moved from spot to spot while they eat the grass, taking away acres of fire hazards at a time. It's a win-win situation! As long as the touring herd doesn't escape again, that is...
