California Monkey Suspected of Calling 911, Sending Deputies to Investigate Zoo

That's one cheeky monkey.

A tiny primate became the primary suspect for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office over the weekend, according to a post shared on their official Facebook page.

On Tuesday, August 16, the department shared that their deputies were involved in a little bit of “monkey business” on Saturday night. It all started with a disconnected 911 call. After dispatchers failed to get the caller back on the line, deputies were sent to investigate the location and found themselves at the offices of Zoo to You, a non-profit conservation zoo that houses exotic animals that can’t be released to the wild and educates the public about protecting the planet.

When officers arrived, everyone on scene was stumped as nobody made the call. “Then they all realized… it must have been Route the Capuchin monkey,” the Sheriff’s office wrote.

Apparently, while monkeying around sometime earlier in the day, Route picked up the zoo's cell phone from a golf cart, which employees use to get around the 40-acre site. “We're told Capuchin monkeys are very inquisitive and will grab anything and everything and just start pushing buttons,” the Sheriff’s office continued. “And that's what Route did... just so happened it was in the right combination of numbers to call us.”

According to the Sheriff’s office, Route is a little embarrassed by her mistake. “But you can't really blame her, after all monkey see, monkey do. 🙈🙊🙉,” they joked.

The famous little movie monkey, Crystal, is living proof of that. The capuchin monkey has stolen the spotlight in The Hangover Part II, the Night at the Museum series, George of the Jungle, Community, and many other films and shows.
