This Calculator Shows You How Much It Costs to Relocate to Another Country

Can you guess where the most affordable place to move abroad is? This tool will tell you.

One of the greatest joys of traveling is going somewhere unfamiliar and finding so much delight that you consider moving there. But the very thought of moving to another country can immediately feel daunting.

So, the team at expat insurance company William Russell has come up with a fun way to take an essential first step with its Relocation Calculator. Using the simplified tool, both Americans and Brits can find out the average monthly cost of living in more than 30 countries.

“Whether you plan to move abroad for three months or 30 years, there are many factors that can make or break your experience of living in a foreign country,” William Russell explains on its site. “While good preparation such as learning at least some of the language and doing thorough research on the best place for you to live are surefire ways of making the most of your time abroad, more mundane factors such as living costs and personal finances should never be ignored.”

Distance played a major factor in costs; The relocation calculator shows that Canada is the most affordable country for U.S. expats to move to, followed by Mexico. Other nations in the top 10 most affordable countries to relocate to included Ireland, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

The company looked at each of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, using the monthly cost of living there, based on rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center with data from Numbeo, as well as looking at OECD data for average wages. It combined that number with moving costs based on a three 25-kilogram (about 55.1-pound) packages from MyUS.com, plus a plane ticket cost from Skyscanner, departing from the cheaper of New York City’s JFK or Los Angeles International (or London Heathrow for the UK rates), as of Jan. 9. (Note that currency conversion rates were based on older rates from XE.com from March 2022.)
