Florals for spring may not be groundbreaking, but we’ve got some news that is: come October 24, the long anticipated musical adaptation of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ will come to London’s West End, and we have all the details you need to buy tickets.

More from WWD

Vanessa Williams will be stepping into the heels of Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway Magazine that Meryl Streep played in the 2006 film. In a statement to Variety, Williams had this to say: “Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks.”

This isn’t the first time the Streep and Williams have played the same roles on stage and screen: Williams played The Witch in the 2002 Broadway revival production of “Into the Woods,” with Streep going on to play the part in the 2014 film adaptation. Both earned nominations in their mediums, with a Tony and Oscar nomination, respectively. If history repeats itself (Streep was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Priestly in 2007), Williams will be sure to be recognized for her spin on the character.

After a 2022 development run in Chicago, The Devil Wears Prada musical will begin at London’s Dominion Theatre from October 2024. It will play a preview engagement this summer at Theatre Royal Plymouth prior to opening in the West End in October. With an original score written by Elton John and direction and choreography by three-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell, we anticipate the musical to be as quotable and compelling as the original movie. Williams is the only casting that’s been announced.

Williams is all too familiar with playing love-to-hate them characters. From 2006 to 2010, the actress portrayed Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty, a tough-as-nails former supermodel turned creative director of the fictional Mode Magazine alongside America Ferrera.

The musical is based on the 2003 novel by former Vogue assistant Lauren Weisberger (later becoming the 2006 movie), which chronicles the transformation of recent college graduate Andrea “Andy” Sachs, an aspiring journalist who stumbles into the cutthroat fashion world of Runway Magazine. At the time, Runway Magazine was widely believed to be a roman à clef about Vogue Magazine and its editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. After being put through multiple tests and gradually understanding how to work under her demanding boss, Andy ultimately comes to a crossroad: to continue to pursue her dream of writing, or to continue to rise the ranks within Runway.

Opening night is nearly sold out, with other dates running up through May 2025. We hope the next stop after May will be Broadway, where more fans can watch Williams sink her teeth into the role (a verified Instagram account for the Broadway show has us convinced it’s in the works).

Unfortunately, for Broadway, you’re going to have to wait a little longer. Broadway dates and the theater location have yet to have been announced, but we’ll update this page once more information becomes available. Watch this space for more details to come as casting, reviews and we hope, excessive praise comes in. Additionally, an Instagram has been launched for both the West End and Broadway iterations, as well as a website.

If you’re hoping to get into the spirit while we wait for opening night, we recommend streaming ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ movie version on Amazon Prime, but if you’d like a more physical copy, the DVD can be found here. Looking for the source material? You can find the book here.
