You Can Buy This Amazing Vintage Chintz Fabric on Chairish Right Now
As much as we love a good modern-day take on classic chintz, there's something about the OG '80s version—ultra-glazed, over-scaled, often involving copious amounts of ribbons and bows—that we just can't get enough of. Unless you happen to have access to your grandmother's original stash, actually getting your hands on some of these vintage printed cottons usually requires a lot of digging through eBay or Etsy, and even then, it's generally in small quantities. But thanks to Bassett McNab and Chairish, you now have a chance to scoop up some truly next-level-grandmillennial chintzes online.
Bassett McNab, for the unfamiliar, is a 125-year-old, Pennsylvania-based textile and wallcovering manufacturer known for its high-end fabrics in super-trad motifs. Last year, it was acquired by Stout, another Philadelphia fabric company, whose current leadership team—brother-and-sister duo John and Kate Greenwalt—are now in the process of reviving the Bassett McNab brand, which hadn't introduced any new designs in 20 years.
This fall, Bassett McNab is set to debut its first collection under the new team, which includes an array of prints and wovens inspired by the company's archives and updated in new colorways and materials. (We recently got to preview the line, and believe us, it's a good one.) Before that happens, though, the Greenwalts are making a select number of the original, straight-out-of-the-'80s (and '90s) fabrics and wallpapers available to consumers through Chairish.
"When we acquired the company, we found some really amazing vintage designs buried in the warehouse that we just fell in love with," says John Greenwalt. But because the original printing screens were lost or damaged, he explains, "we're couldn't reproduce them the same way—most machines can’t even print these colors anymore," so they decided to sell off the remaining stock.
From ribbon stripes and chic chinoiseries to over-the-top florals and ditsy prints, the vintage collection is full of one-of-a-kind fabrics (and wallcoverings) that would make any Prince of Chintz disciple swoon. "Whether you haven't seen them in decades or you're new to the brand, it's a breath of fresh air," says Greenwalt. "We've found that a lot of these prints resonate just as much with younger designers—they're new classics," he adds.
The collection is now available for purchase on Chairish and will be up on the site until stock sells out. In other words, says Greenwalt, "Once they're gone, they're gone!"
