Busy Philipps wants you to talk about your vulva. She also wants you to treat it with the respect—and skin care—that it deserves.

The actor and podcast host is known (and beloved!) for using her platform to start this very type of conversation. “It's my whole mission in life at this point is to de-stigmatize anything having to do with women's bodies and the choices that they make and the way that they're treated,” Philipps tells Glamour.

“The fact that social media bans certain words like period, clitoris, vulva, deeming them too sexual is outrageous to me,” she continues. “Why is it so scary, especially for people without vaginas and vulvas, for us to [talk about them]? Does it have to do with the fact that if we are empowered and know and stand in our truth that they feel it takes away something from them? Probably, but it doesn't. So we have to all just continue to say 'vulva.'”

As for why Philipps thinks the vulva has been left out of health and skin care conversations up until this point? “There's a real lack of education around women's bodies,” Philipps says. “For a long time there was a lack of information, period. It wasn't as researched or studied because, for well, a myriad of reasons. We don't need to get into the history of the patriarchy.

Philipps has started to make vulva care a part of her daily regimen. “I started thinking about the fact that I spend so much time, money, and care on the things that I put on the skin on my body. I have different lotions and creams for different parts, and was just treating my vulva like it's my elbow. Like, what? That's insane!” she explains. “You use different creams and washes for all kinds of parts of your body, and your vulva is no different. It really changed the way I was thinking about my vulva.”

The actor is so passionate about the cause, in fact, that she partnered with vulva skin care brand Say La V to help normalize and de-stigmatize conversations about the vulva.

“Knowledge is power—especially when it comes to our bodies,” she says. “Bodies are complex, and incredible and are capable of doing really brilliant things. They shape-shift and change and provide all of these incredible services, they nourish. I just feel like we've got to all do a better job at educating ourselves, our friends, our kids, about women’s bodies.”

Philipps also aims to encourage women to own and embrace their intimate wellness and bodies in all walks of life—and if you struggle to do so now, fake it until you do. “I had a lot of bad programming about my body and a lot of negative talk around my body, and realized when [my daughter] Birdie was a baby that that I had to stop," she admits. "I made a conscious decision to fake it because I didn't want her to hear me talking about myself that way, but after a couple of years, I realized I really genuinely started to love my body. I really was faking it for a long time, until all of a sudden, one day, I was like, ‘Oh, wait, I really feel that way. Whoa, that's wild.’”

Fortunately, she also shared what she uses on the rest of her body. Ahead, Busy Philipps shares top eight must-have beauty and wellness products—vulva care included.

Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara

Honestly, I started using this mascara because they advertised on my podcast and they sent me products to try. And when I tell you that I should own stock in the company because I'm so obsessed. And I have daily, on Instagram, people message me and are like, "Wait, what is that mascara? What are you doing because your eyelashes look so good." It's the Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara. It's a game changer. I literally have it with me everywhere I am all the time. It's just really, really great mascara.

SAY LA V. Nourishing Veauty Feminine Wash

I have the Say La V nourishing Beauty wash is in my shower. I've been using it now for a couple of weeks. I love it because your vulva has lots of oil glands. There are trillions of bacteria that are balanced and keeping the vulva healthy and protecting you and that can be thrown off by any number of things. I work out a lot, I'm very sweaty, and products like these help balance that out.

Overtone Hair Color Depositing Conditioner

Okay well, I'm going to say, it because people ask me all the time and you commented on [my pink hair]: I use the Overtone Color Depositing Conditioner. I go back and forth between blonde and pink. Normally it's when my roots are growing out and I'm feeling like I needed to get my roots done, and I'm feeling bored with my color.

Overtone has been the thing that I've used for years now, and I love it and it smells great, and I love the color and I do it myself. People are always like, "You just do that yourself?" I'm like, "Yeah, why not? Who cares?" And it washes out really well and evenly. And then they have a mask. So the first time you do it, you can use the mask and then you just use the conditioner to maintain the color that you want. I typically use the rose gold and the pastel pink, and I will combine them.

BEHAVE Sour Gummy Bears

I'm a gummy treats addict and I have been for a long time. I've been very vocal about my gummy addiction, and I'm obsessed with these ones now. I always have these in my purse, because I never know when I need a little smack. The Sour Bears are delicious. They're so good. And it's three grams of sugar for the pouch, and I try to not eat so much sugar.

if I can just get them to make a cinnamon gummy bear for me, we're going to be good to go. I'm going to manifest it.
