There are hundreds of BIPOC-owned and women-owned brands you can support nowadays; however, there is still a general lack of visibility for many Indigenous brands. Thus, a brand you should get to know is Bush Medijina.

Bush Medijina came from a group of Waringakalina Elders. They wanted to teach their communities the secrets of self-care, health and female empowerment. The program operates from Groote Eylandt, governed by an all-female team who all speak Anindilyakwa.

“Most important to us is the wellbeing of Warningakalina women,” it says on the site. “As Indigenous women, we face many challenges. With high rates of crime and violence in our communities we don’t always feel safe, impacting our mental health, and that of our children. School attendance rates are low; jobs are scarce. Our life expectancy is reduced due to systemic and genetic health issues, exacerbated by our remote location and limited access to services.”

Of the team, 80 percent are Indigenous Australians and harvest native botanicals and herbs were passed down from generation to generation. These herbs become body butter, balms, soaps and more for sale.

When you buy from this brand, not only are you directly investing in Aboriginal culture, but you’re also investing in a women-owned brand and its cultural preservation. Shop some of the brand’s best sellers down below.
