Busch Gardens reveals name of new baby orangutan

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Busch Gardens’ newest addition has a name.

The theme park welcomed a baby orangutan on April 13 with quite a remarkable story.

“We realized on April 13 during a routine ultrasound that baby wasn’t quite in the right position. Not only was she breached but she also had her umbilical cord in the wrong position for Luna to deliver naturally and safely. So our veterinary team collaborated with specialist from around the state who all came in to help collaborate on this very unique venture. We’re proud to say that baby is healthy and so is Luna and they’re both bonding very well behind the scenes are they were reunited just a few short days later,” said Kayla, one of the zoological curators at Busch Gardens.

The critically endangered Bornean Orangutan was born via c-section and weighed only 3.4 pounds.

Busch Gardens asked fans to help name the new baby. After thousands of votes, the theme park announced the baby was named Stella.

Busch Gardens said the mom, Luna, and Stella are starting to explore the behind-the-scenes orangutan space.

“Luna is climbing perfectly well and one of the coolest things is watching baby hold on nice and tight. That’s exactly what we want to see from her at this stage. While she hasn’t made her debut habitat yet, we hope that she will soon,” Busch Gardens said.
