How did Burt Bacharach become famous?

Born in Kansas City and raised in Queens, New York, Burt Bacharach was the son of songwriter Irma M. Bacharach and newspaper columnist Bertram "Bert" Bacharach. His mother encouraged him to take piano lessons at a young age, and he was a fan of jazz over the classical songs he was initially taught to practice.

Burt Bacharach got a Bachelor's degree in music from McGill University in Montreal and continued his studies at Mannes School of Music and the Music Academy of the West.

He then spent two years in the Army, where he met singer Vic Damone. He continued composing and playing piano for Damone following their military service, also working with other artists through the Catskills and in Europe.

In the 1950s, Burt Bacharach joined forces with songwriting partner Hal David, and in 1957, they got their first country No. 1 with "The Story of My Life," recorded by Marty Robbins.

They followed with Perry Como's "Magic Moments," which hit No. 4 on the U.S. pop charts and No. 1 in the U.K.

In the U.K., "The Story of My Life" was recorded by Michael Holliday and soared to No. 1.

Together, Bacharach and David wrote over 100 songs together in the 1960s alone, discovering singer Dionne Warwick in 1961 and collaborating with her on 39 charting songs, 22 of which made the Top 40.
