Burger King's Hot Pink Barbie Burger Divides the Internet

Burger King is doing its part to support one of this summer’s most anticipated films.

In honor of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Burger King locations in Brazil have unveiled the Barbie Burger, and it’s already making an impact across the globe. According to an English-language interpretation of BK’s Brazilian website, the Barbie Burger is comprised of “a fluffy brioche bun, tall and juicy meat, a slice of well-melted cheddar cheese, the incredible smokey pink sauce, and crispy diced bacon.”

Yet the burger is only one part of a combo meal ingeniously devised to remind you that Barbie is a movie you can see in theaters this summer.

Along with a Barbie burger, the dinner set includes “batado de Ken,” or Ken’s fries, which are just regular BK fries. A vanilla milkshake, colored light pink with strawberry Nesquik, finishes off the combo. In a health-conscious addition, Burger King is garnishing the milkshake’s straw with a full donut, frosted pink of course.

Unlike last month’s red-bunned Whoppers to promote Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, this particular Burger King marketing tie-in won’t be making its way to domestic locations. That may or may not be a good thing, considering the dubious impression Barbie’s burger has made online.

“They put Pepto Bismol in the Barbie Burger,” one Twitter user wrote.

"I can already feel the stomach pains," another user quipped.

Yet one diner, who goes by the name @nayadeee on Instagram, seemed quite taken with their meal. They posted a peculiarly loving tribute to it on Instagram, revealing a markedly different view of the combo than press materials do.

“When the combo is too beautiful (and delicious) just for the story,” @nayadeee captioned her post. One picture shows a depleted-looking burger with a thin layer of dried pink goo inside. On the bun, above the cheese, is a peculiar discoloration. Another photo shows an equally dehydrated-looking donut with hard, cracked frosting on the top, garnishing a milkshake which appears half-empty.

Brazil’s Barbie combo is hardly the only edible tie-in Barbie is engaged with this summer. She’s also representing ice cream at both Pinkberry and Cold Stone Creamery, and she’s even endorsing pasta.

If you’re curious to see how the Barbie Burger is made, and perhaps attempt it for yourself, you can check out the video below.

Barbie hits theaters on July 21, where it will square off with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer at the box office.
