"No shade, just flames," reads Burger King's latest tweet. If you're totally lost, let me catch you up quickly. This week, news broke that Wendy's was introducing "surge pricing" in the style of Uber or other rideshare apps, wherein prices could rise during busier hours at the fast food restaurants. The news spread after Wendy’s CEO Kirk Tanner announced in a conference call that the chain will "begin testing more enhanced features like dynamic pricing."

In a later statement, the company clarified they “would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most,“ but rather the “dynamic pricing“ would mean deals and value offers during slower times of the day. However, the news was enough to get the attention of many, including Wendy's biggest competitors (some of whom have been dealing with menu controversies of their own). And what better way is there to clap back at the competition than with some freebies?

Burger King Is Giving Away Free Whoppers This Week

In response to the controversial Wendy's news, Burger King released a statement writing, “We don’t believe in charging guests more when they’re hungry,” and announcing the chain would be giving away free Whoppers for three days. The brand added a witty retort; "Surge pricing? Well, that’s new...Good thing the only thing surging at BK is our flame!”

Now through Friday, March 1, you can get a free Whopper or vegetarian Impossible Whopper with any purchase of $3 or more on the Burger King app. The deal can be used once a day and can be found in the "Offers" tab in the BK app. Take this opportunity to try the chain's new Candied Bacon Whopper and you'll get a Whopper on the house, courtesy of the King. Not eating meat for Lent? Don't worry, the chain has a new Lenten offering that might tempt you to visit the drive-thru anyway.

Look, we're all about a little friendly competition, especially when it means great deals and better value in the end. So if a little shade is what it takes to get there, we're here for it. As the saying goes, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the [fast food] kitchen.
