If you want to order your Burger King faves online, you’ll have to pay up—but thanks to a new geographical surcharge, your fee might be more depending on where you live.

The fast food chain just added the new surcharge to its BK App and order online capabilities that will only affect some customers. Keep scrolling to see if you’re one of the ones affected by the new fee.

Burger King Adds Geographical Surcharge To BK App And Ordering Online

If you want to order your Burger King digitally, your main options are online via the chain's website and through the BK App. For delivery orders costing $5 to $9.99, customers pay a $1 delivery fee, a 15% service fee, and due to the smaller size of the order, a $2.50 "small cart fee."

However, thanks to a new surcharge, BK fans ordering in California will be charged an additional $2 fee based purely on their location. This doesn't only affect small orders, too—regular delivery orders $10 and up place online or via the BK App get a $1 delivery fee and 15% service fee tacked on (no small cart fee here), but California customers will still be charged that same additional $2 for their order. Across the board, there is a $5 minimum to start with for delivery, which is also not an option for Hawaii and Alaska residents.

The new surcharge only affects California customers, with the only explanation on the Burger King site coming in the Delivery Terms section: "California Orders Only: Additional $2 geographical fee is charged by the delivery aggregator." This likely means that whatever service the chain is using to collect received orders and send to the restaurant is instituting the surcharge.

Still Ways To Save On The BK App

Have no fear, Cali customers—there are other ways to save when dining at Burger King, even despite this new $2 add-on charge.

Becoming a member of the Burger King Royal Perks program will help save you money in the long run, with the loyalty program offering "Crowns" for items purchased in restaurants, on the BK App, or on BK.com. Every $1 spent earns customers 10 Crowns back, which add up for redeeming on things like upgrades, freebies, and bonus menu items. During your birthday month every eligible transaction earns double Crowns back. The program is free—just download the BK App and sign right up!

Keep an eye out, though: the fast food chain just announced on its website that, starting July 1st, Crows earned in your account will expire on the first day of the month coming six months after the Crowns were first earns. So, for example, if you earn 50 crowns for an order made on January 5th, 2024, they will expire on August 1st, 2024 if they are not redeemed ahead of time. But, if you're diligent with your Crowns and engage with the app relatively frequently, losing rewards points shouldn't be a problem. The website also specified that any Crowns in existing accounts earned before July 1st of this year will expire on July 1st, 2024.

Customers can check their earned Crowns and rewards eligibility on the BK App or by signing in to their account on BK.com.
