This Bugatti Chiron Is a One-Off Tribute to the Marque’s Most Valuable Car Ever

Before turning its attention to the future, Bugatti is going to spend a little time looking back on its illustrious past.

The French automaker has just unveiled its latest unique build, the Chiron Super Sport 57 One of One. The stunning coupé is a tribute to one of the marque’s most important vehicles, the Type 57 SC Atlantic, as well as one of the final examples of its second-generation hypercar.

With its flowing lines and trademark dorsal seam, the Type 57 SC is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful cars ever built. Just four rolled were made during the second half of the 1930s, and only three survive to this day. One of those is on display at the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, Calif., which is where the unnamed owner of this unique Chiron first saw it, according to the brand. She was so taken by the metallic blue two-door that her husband commissioned a hypercar that took its style cues from the vehicle from the marque for her 70th birthday.

This isn’t the first time the Type 57 SC Atlantic has inspired a modern-day Bugatti. But unlike the Atlantic Concept from a few years back, the Chiron Super Sport 57 One of One is a car that was actually meant to be driven. As such, the automaker has treated the hypercar to a surprisingly subtle makeover. It’s finished in a blue metallic, just like the Mullin Museum car, and has a revised polished chrome grille with vertical slats and matching five-spoke rims. The underside of the rear wing also features an illustration of the Type 57 SC Atlantic as well as the phrases “57” and “One of One.”

Inside the car, the entire two-seat cabin is covered in Gaucho brown leather. The door panels feature an embroidered design that depicts the Type 57 Atlantic, while the headrests are adorned with the automaker’s Dancing Elephant logo. There’s also model-specific branding and reproductions of Jean and Rembrandt Bugatti’s signatures on the door sills.

No mention was made of any modifications to the powertrain, but since this is a Chiron Super Sport one can safely assume there’s a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 sitting in the engine bay. The brutish mill produces a hair-raising 1,578 hp and 1,180 ft lbs of torque. If the owner ever feels like pushing the car to the limit, she’ll be able to go from zero to 60 mph in just over two seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 273 mph.

Unsurprisingly, no price was mentioned in Bugatti’s unveiling of the Chiron Super Sport 57 One of One. We don’t think we’re going out on a limb in saying it probably cost a lot, at the very least more than a regular Chiron Super Sport, which starts at $3.8 million.
