"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Is Getting a Reboot

And, according to producers, it's going to be inclusive AF.

It's officially the age of television reboots, and another '90s classic is getting a turn. According to Deadline, Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be returning to TV, and producers are looking to cast a black actor as the title character.

Deadline adds that the new series, which is currently in development at Fox 21 TV Studios, will feature Monica Owusu-Breen as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The Buffy reboot's team will also consist of Joss Whedon (the creator of the original show), who will also executive produce, and Gail Berman, Fran Kazui, Kaz Kazui, and Joe Earley.

It might be a while before we can actually sit down and watch the new Buffy face off with villains, as the series is still in its early stages, and will be pitched to streaming services this summer. But from what producers have said so far, it sure sounds promising. Deadline reports that the creative team described the reboot by saying: "Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer first premiered on the WB in 1997, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. It later moved to UPN, where it concluded in 2003 after seven seasons. The series was based on the 1992 movie of the same name, which starred Kristy Swanson as the lead slayer.
