Nothing makes the holiday feel complete until you’ve had sugar cookies and hot chocolate. If you don’t have them, did the holidays even happen? They are the two dessert stables that hold this festive season together. So what if there was a recipe that brought the two most holiday treats together?

This Sugar Cookie Hot Chocolate is unlike anything you’ve ever had before, and probably what Buddy the Elf drinks for breakfast. All you have to do to create a batch is bake a few extra sugar cookies and soak the leftovers into milk. The hardest part is obviously to not eat all the cookies before you do.

Once you’ve created your cookies and milk flavor, it’s time to melt in white chocolate. Let the cookies cool, add holiday sprinkles, and there you have it — a little extra cheer this season.

Sugar Cookie Hot Chocolate

Serves 4 (serving size: 1 1/2 cups)
Active 10 min. Total 30 min.

Ingredients:

4 1/2 cups whole milk
6 oz. (about 2 cups) crushed unfrosted sugar cookies (store-bought or homemade), plus whole cookies for serving
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk (from 1 can)
1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. almond extract (optional)
6 oz. white chocolate bar, chopped
2 cups sweetened whipped cream
2 Tbsp. red, green, and silver jimmies candy sprinkles

Directions:

1. Combine milk and crushed cookies in a large bowl, stirring to moisten cookies. Let sit at room temperature until cookies practically disintegrate, about 20 minutes.
2. Pour milk mixture through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a large saucepan, pressing against solids to extract milk; discard solids. Stir in sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and almond extract, if desired. Heat mixture over medium, stirring often, until steaming. Add white chocolate in batches, stirring constantly, until melted, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
3. Ladle into mugs; dollop with whipped cream and sprinkle with jimmies. Serve with sugar cookies, if desired.
