  • Buckingham Palace set up Prince Harry to be the “bad boy” in contrast to Prince William.

  • William helped this narrative along by encouraging Harry to wear a Nazi costume for Halloween in 2005.

Just when we thought the royal rift was over, surprise! It’s up and running yet again, because a new book—accurately titled Battle of Brothers: The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult, by historian Robert Lacey—is sharing alllll the hot gossip on what’s been going on between Prince William and Prince Harry over the years. According to the book, part of the brothers’ long-standing beef was because Harry was set up to be the bad boy.

In an excerpt from the book obtained by People, Lacey explained that Harry made headlines as a teen while attending Eton College for underage drinking, fighting photographers, and smoking weed (which, in Harry’s defense, he did tell his dad about). As a result, Prince Charles arranged for Harry to visit a drug rehab facility in 2002 to learn about the work the organization does, but palace officials said Charles made the arrangement to create a teachable moment for Harry. Lacey wrote:

“Dad might have emerged from the story smelling of roses, but it was Harry who was typecast as the ‘Bad Boy of Buckingham Palace.’”

There was another major incident in 2005, in which Harry came under fire for wearing a Nazi uniform costume to a party he attended with William. Lacey said this choice “would be taken to represent his [Harry’s] wild, foolish, and totally un-judged side.” After a picture of him at the party ended up in The Sun, Harry apologized for his “poor choice of costume.”

What the public didn’t know was that William actually encouraged Harry to wear the Nazi costume and basically got off scot-free for the incident. According to the book, “Harry chose his costume in conjunction with his elder brother, who laughed all the way back to Highgrove with the younger sibling he was supposed to be mentoring.”

Hopefully William and Harry can get back on the same page, but they have a lot of work to do to get there. According to Lacey, “Both brothers have been damaged by their upbringings; both have reacted by finding different solutions. There is so much pain and trauma in this story, going right back to the beginning.”
