This weekend, Buckingham Palace shared a new portrait of the royal family. The photo shows King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales in their mourning clothes the night before Queen Elizabeth's funeral.

The four royals hosted world leaders at Buckingham Palace the evening before the funeral, welcoming U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, among others.

The photo demonstrates the slimmed-down monarchy that King Charles is hoping for during his reign. The working royals under the reign of Charles are likely going to be limited to the King and Queen Consort, the new Prince and Princess of Wales, and two of Charles's siblings—Princess Anne and Prince Edward—along with Edward's wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

Royal watchers saw the smaller royal family on display during Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee earlier this year. At what would be her last Buckingham Palace balcony appearance, Queen Elizabeth appeared just with Charles, Camilla, Kate, William, and the three Cambridge (now Wales) children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

While the portrait was taken during the mourning period for Queen Elizabeth, it was released after the formal mourning period had ended. Last week, Prince William and Princess Kate made their first official engagement following the Queen's funeral, visiting Wales.

Today, King Charles and Queen Camilla stepped out for the first time in a visit to Scotland for the granting of city status to Dunfermline.

This weekend, too, it was announced that the first state visit Charles will host as King will take place in November; he will host the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.
