Buckingham Palace Just Launched Its Own Brand of Gin Now
Buckingham Palace has given royal watchers the gift they didn't know they needed: a small-batch dry gin made from the palace garden's own botanicals.
This morning, the Royal Collection Trust (a department of the Royal Household that oversees the Royal Collection and opens royal residences to the public) revealed that an official Buckingham Palace gin is now available—both to the public at its online shop, and to guests at future palace events. The premium spirit is infused with 12 botanicals, some of which, including lemon verbena, hawthorn berries, bay leaves, and mulberry leaves, were sourced from the palace grounds.
The Trust also offered an ideal recipe for enjoying the gin in the announcement. "The recommended serving method," it read, "is to pour a measure of the gin into an ice-filled short tumbler before topping up with tonic and garnishing with a slice of lemon."
The most devoted royal fans, however, may opt to drink the gin as Queen Elizabeth herself is known to like it. A few years ago, former royal chef Darren McGrady told CNN, "She likes a gin and Dubonnet. That's her favorite drink."
And it's not just her evening cocktail that uses the spirit. In her recent book, The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe, longtime royal dresser Angela Kelly revealed that a mixture of gin and water is used to keep the Queen's large collection of diamonds sparkling. Jury's still out on whether Buckingham Palace's own brand will be used for this important job.
