BTS Surprised Fans With New "Black Swan" Music Video

Hold on to your seats, because BTS has just surprise dropped a new music video for “Black Swan.”

On March 4 and without any previous announcement, the septet unveiled the official music video for the track, which served as the first single for their recently released album Map of the Soul: 7.

The new video opens with the choreography Bangtan also debuted on their performance on The Late Late Show With James Corden back in January — though this time they are clad in white suits, mirroring the “white swan” theme of the first set of concept photos for the album.

The video appears to be filmed at the Los Angeles Theatre, and the location’s grand interiors match the song and video’s vibe to perfection. Through shadow play in the solo shots of the members, the video offers a visual representation of the track’s ruminative narrative and the Jungian shadow concept, which is a recurring metaphor on the album. Most notably at the beginning of the video, RM and Suga’s shadows act with lives of their own.

With a succession of cuts, in the video we see the member’s outfits change from white to black, matching the second set of concept photos (i.e. the “black swan” concept). Though in different ways, we see the seven members playing with their shadows and reflections as well as some breathtaking solo shots of Jimin’s choreo.

Prior to this version, the septet had put out a art film to coincide with the track’s release back in January. The art film featured Slovenian dance group MN Dance Company as well as an exclusive orchestral version of the track.

This is the second of BTS’s releases this year to get a second official music video. These past few weeks, BTS also put out the Kinectic Manifesto as well as the cinematic MV for MOTS: 7’s lead track “ON.”

To say the new video’s release caught ARMYs by surprise would be an understatement, with many taking to Twitter with the hashtag #BlackSwan to share their excitement (and, of course, making it the top trend worldwide.)

After this surprise drop, we just have to say: expect the unexpected! I, for one, will be keeping my eyes peeled (and my notifs on) for potential drops.
