BTS & ARMY forever. With the news of BTS’ military service, many ARMY are asking: When will the rest of BTS do their Korean military service?

On October 17, 2022, BTS’ label BigHit Entertainment announced that the oldest member Jin will enlist in the military via the fan platform Weverse and their official social media platforms. The statement said, “The members of BTS are currently moving forward with plans to fulfill their military service. Group member Jin will initiate the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October. He will then follow the enlistment procedure of the Korean government. Other members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans.” The company added, “Both the company and the members of BTS are looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service commitment.”

Bangtan Sonyeondan, better known as BTS or The Bangtan Boys, debuted in 2013 with members RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. The boyband captured the hearts of millions with their fanbase affectionately called ARMY, which stands for Adorable Representative MC of Youth. The K-pop group’s accomplishments catapulted them to the top of the Billboard Charts, two Grammy nominations and multiple American Music Awards, and  MTV Video Music Awards wins. They were also named TIME’s Entertainer of the Year 2020. In 2022, BTS released an anthology album of their nearly decade-long career called Proof. The single from the album, “Yet to Come” promises there will be more amazing things to come ahead for BTS. The septet finished their concert in Busan for a showcase for the bid for the 2030 World Expo, and it might be the last time that they perform together in a while.

On June 13, 2023 (their 10th anniversary), BTS released “Take Two” an ode to their fans, known as ARMY. According to the press release, it also marks the group moving onto their second chapter after their decade-long journey as artists. They released a book called BTS: Beyond The Story which chronicles their journey within ten years as a group, and are set to release a documentary Beyond The Star on Disney+ on December 2023.

Please note that we will not be holding any kind of official event on the day of his recruitment. The entrance ceremony is a time to be observed by military personnel and their families only. In order to prevent any issues that might occur from crowding, we ask fans to please refrain from visiting the site. Instead, we ask you to keep your heartwarming words of support and farewell in your hearts.” Billboard reported that Jin’s enlistment date is December 13, 2022. In a surprise appearance from a phone call from J-Hope at the 2022 MAMA Awards, Jin said via telephone, “I’ll go and come back from the military well!”

On December 11, 2022, Jin posted a selfie on Weverse with his military buzzcut and captioned it “Cuter than expected” in Korean. He also posted a goodbye message on the fan and artist community site, saying “Ok it’s now time for the curtain call (I wanted to say this when I enlisted)” referring to a character’s line in his favorite game League of Legends who is also named Jhin. BigHit Entertainment posted on Weverse that Suga will start his service on September 22, 2023. “SUGA will be beginning his required service on September 22,” the statement read. “There will not be any official events taking place on the day he starts his service or on the day he enters the training camp. We kindly ask fans to refrain from visiting SUGA at his workplace during the period of his service. Please convey your warm regards and encouragement in your hearts only.”

The statement continued, “Furthermore, please be mindful to avoid getting adversely affected by unauthorized tours or package products that illegally use the artist’s intellectual property. Our company will take appropriate measures against attempts at any commercial activity that make unauthorized use of artist IP. We ask for your continued love and support for SUGA until he completes his service and returns. Our company will also strive to provide all the support he needs during this time.

Suga posted on Weverse on the day of his enlistment while giving his thanks and support to ARMY. “I’ll faithfully serve and come back … Please stay healthy and let’s meet all again in 2025.”

Because of a shoulder surgery in 2020, Suga will serve as a social service agent, per the Associated Press. The job is a kind of compulsory employment set up as an alternative to military conscription, especially for those with physical or mental health issues (though they still have to complete three weeks of basic military training at some point).
