BTS Fans Raised $1 Million for Black Lives Matter Organizations in 24 Hours
After BTS made a $1 million donation to Black Lives Matter, the band's fans (known as the BTS Army) decided to quickly match it through small individual donations. According to Teen Vogue, fans started the #MatchaMillion hashtag following the donation and within one day exceeded their goal.
A spokesperson for One in an Army, a fan organization that organized the donations, said, "We added a goal tracker to our donation page and our website purely to keep ARMY updated on the total amount raised. We’ve run big projects before, but the amount of support for this project is overwhelming. We truly didn’t know whether the goal would be reached. We’re so proud that ARMY have once again channeled their power for good and are making a real impact in the fight against anti-black racism."
The donations were made through Act Blue, and they allow a person to split what they give through 27 various organizations including the NAACP, the ACLU, and Reclaim the Block.
Outside of donations, K-Pop fans have stepped up in other ways on social media. Just last week, many flooded racist and white supremacist hashtags with messages of support for Black Lives Matter. They also inundated the Dallas Police Department's call for videos of "illegal activity" with videos of K-Pop making it difficult for any other submissions to come through. Eventually, the department shut down the app.
