BTS Boasts About Smooth Moves in Lyrics For New Song, 'Butter'

T.G.I.F, because BTS just dropped their highly-anticipated second English single, "Butter," and to be honest, I can't think of a better way to kick off the weekend.
BTS recently covered Rolling Stone, where they got candid about the origins of the band and how its future might look a little different than expected. There was also a ton of mystery surrounding the K-Pop group when they all seemingly dyed their hair leading up to the release of their new song.
Their smash-hit single, "Dynamite," dominated the music scene last year and helped fans dance through the tumultuous events of 2020. With the release of "Butter," BTS decided to go off and prove that they're back with a bang as the song is just as infectious as its predecessor.

The song starts off strong with an allusion to the king of pop, Michael Jackson. In 1987, he dropped his smash single "Smooth Criminal," which BTS nods to when they say they're "smooth like butter, like a criminal undercover."
They seem to love nostalgia as they make a reference to the "Trouble" board game, which has a poppable dome to roll the dice.

In the chorus, more MJ references come into play, with lyrics like "High like the moon, rock with me." Michael Jackson was widely known for popularizing the moonwalk dance move, and he has a song called "Rock With You."

In an interview with MTV Australia, RM said that he worked on half the raps included in the song.
"When we first encountered this song, 'Butter' was selected among many, many songs. It was already from the guide very complete. We wanted to participate, but it was already very good. For some parts — the rap parts — it wasn’t fully compatible with our style. So I think that’s what inspired us to participate [in working on the song]. I didn’t participate just because I speak English. I was lucky to be able to participate in making this song," he said.
