BTS's RM Looks Forward to Progressing the Group's Sound

“I want to show our various sides that reflect the progression of our age.”

BTS just recently wrapped their Love Yourself trilogy series for good, but the South Korean septet is already looking forward to their next move.

In a new interview for PAPER’s #BreakTheInternet cover story, the Bangtan Boys opened up about what avenues they’d like to explore in the future, and they have big plans. In discussing what the future of BTS might sound like, Jin revealed he’s keen "to try something in the genre of rock," and V said he wants "to try doing music in the style of Conan Gray." And, well, that’s something you can certainly sign us up for.

Other members weren’t as direct with their wishes for the future. “There are so many things I want to try, but I don't want to be too specific about it,” Jimin shared. “It's different from time to time,” Jungkook said of his musical aspirations. “I just hope I can widen my vocal spectrum, regardless of what that might be.”

Leader RM, on the other hand, got very specific and candid about his hopes for the group’s future, and said that he’s looking forward to progressing and ultimately maturing the group’s sound. “I want to show our various sides that reflect the progression of our age as well as our emotions and sensibilities,” RM, whose real name is Kim Namjoon, told the magazine, implying that he’d want to make music with the group for many years to come.

Maturing is a part of life, so it’s only natural BTS’s music will reflect those changes as they advance in their careers. Following the culmination of the Love Yourself era, and especially after the momentous release of this year’s Map of the Soul: Persona, more eyes than ever are set on BTS, and many fans are curious about what the septet might have in store. “We are currently practicing and working on new songs so we can show you the best sides of ourselves,” the septet told PAPER.

With a comeback on the horizon, the pressures and expectation keep building up for the group, but J-Hope is more than sure about the group’s natural progression so far, and going into the future. “Now it feels like BTS is just BTS,” the choreo leader said. “Whichever [style of] music or performance, it comes out in BTS style.”

It feels like BTS doesn’t really stop working — like, ever. Whether it’s new music, solo projects, countless collabs, or filming reality shows, Bangtan stays booked and busy, and ARMYs get a stream of quality content from the group almost daily.

So it’s only a matter of time before the group’s wishes for the future become a reality. As Suga himself put it, “There's plenty of things to show you, so please look forward to it.” You can bet we will.
