Laptops and smartphones are all the rage these days, but the right desktop computer can free you from tiny screens and sluggish processors. Desktop computers are the best choice for gaming, too, and most will allow you to customize or add components at will.

Specs to Consider

There are a dizzying array of options when it comes to desktop computers. But don’t let that overwhelm you. If all you’re doing is browsing the web, watching movies and creating documents, any computer on this list should perform well. Keep in mind that not every desktop computer comes with a monitor. If you’re buying a display separately, look for one that is at least Full HD resolution while a 4K screen will offer an even crisper image.

First, decide whether you want a computer that runs the Mac or the Windows operating system. There’s a fierce debate between the Mac and Windows camps over which is better, but for most people who want to do everyday computing tasks like browsing the web, word processing and watching movies, either operating system does the job.

The exception to this rule is if you’re looking to use your desktop for gaming. While there are hundreds of games made for the Mac OS, the vast majority of serious gamers prefer Windows. Most games are released for Windows first, and often, they are not available for Mac computers.

For a Windows 10 desktop PC, expect to spend around $1,000 for a machine that can handle light gaming as well as photo and video editing. You should look for an Nvidia GTX/RTX or AMD Radeon RX graphics card and at least 16 gigabytes of RAM that will help TKTKTKTK. The more RAM you have the more smoothly your PC will run. With at least 16 gigabytes of RAM you should have enough to run several programs at once like Microsoft Word and a web browser with multiple tabs open. Massive hard drives are relatively inexpensive these days but are easy to fill up if you’re storing games or videos. Look for at least 512 GB of storage unless you plan to keep a lot of your data in the cloud.

Mac desktops offer fewer options but can be a solid choice due to Apple’s well-earned reputation for top-notch hardware and reliable software. Either the Mac Mini or the iMac M1 should offer plenty of horsepower to tackle most tasks unless you are a serious gamer.

How We Selected

I’m a tech journalist who’s owned desktop computers for decades. I recently spent a dozen hours researching and reading reviews of the latest desktops. I am currently using an iMac M1 (and wrote this review on it). As a freelancer, I’ve written for publications, including The New York Times and The Atlantic. I looked at processor speed, RAM, and graphics cards to sort out the best of the desktops available.

Desktops come in a variety of styles, but one thing about them is the same: they’re meant for use in a fixed space. Unlike laptops, desktops boast a larger size, are more powerful, and have additional component options. At the heart of a desktop is the tower, a powerhouse that contains the motherboard, CPU, RAM, storage drives, power supply, and possibly a dedicated graphics card. This central unit connects to essential companions like a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, ultimately creating a complete computing setup.

If it's a sleek style you want, go for an all-in-one desktop, which fuses the computer's brain and monitor into one stylish unit. It's the perfect solution for those who prefer a minimalist look or for those short on space. This option delivers with a neat, cable-free environment. For those who prize compactness, the mini desktop shrinks the traditional tower's form, delivering respectable power while focusing on saving space and reducing energy use.

The price spectrum of desktops is as diverse as their forms. Entry-level models can be a wallet-friendly few hundred dollars, while top-tier machines can soar to several thousand. The price is dictated by a mix of the computer's performance prowess, the quality of its components, its construction finesse, and the reputation of its brand.

New trends in desktop computers include a focus on sustainability, with energy-efficient components and recyclable materials becoming more prominent. There’s also a rise in the adoption of liquid cooling systems for better thermal management and speed. Also, with the increasing demand for high-powered computing, there are more desktops with advanced CPUs and GPUs catering to gamers and professionals who require robust performance.

The latest desktop developments further indicate increased convergence with other technologies. For example, some desktops now offer built-in AI accelerators for machine learning tasks, and there's a growing interest in desktops that support virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences.

What to Look For in a Desktop Computer

Display

When shopping for a desktop computer display, key features to watch for include resolution, panel type, refresh rate, and size. Aim for at least a Full HD (1080p) resolution for crisp visuals, but 4K delivers an even sharper image. Panel types like IPS (In Plane Switching) provide excellent color accuracy and viewing angles essential for graphic work.

A higher refresh rate, measured in Hertz (Hz), makes for smoother motion, a boon for gaming. Size-wise, 24- to 27-inches hits a sweet spot for most users, balancing space and usability. Also, consider the display's connectivity options to ensure compatibility with your computer, looking for ports like HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C. Lastly, an ergonomic stand with tilt, swivel, and height adjustments will help maintain a comfortable viewing position.

More to Consider: Best Mouse PadsBest Gaming ChairsBest External Hard Drives

RAM

Aim for at least 8GB of RAM for light use, but grab 16GB or more for gaming and heavy-duty tasks. Speed-wise, the faster the MHz, the quicker your programs will run. Go for DDR4 or even speedier DDR5 memory, starting around 2666 MHz, for the sweet spot of speed and value. If you see the term "low latency" on a chip specification, that means it reacts faster, so a lower number is better. Check that it fits your motherboard's limits. And for an extra boost, get a dual-channel kit (that's two sticks of RAM) to get things moving.

Processor

When selecting a processor for your desktop, the generation and model of Intel Core CPUs are crucial. Aim for the latest technology: a 13th or 14th-generation Intel Core. The Core i3 is cost-effective for everyday tasks, while the i5 balances performance and price, suitable for moderate use.

For intensive tasks like video editing or gaming, the i7 is a robust choice. The powerhouse i9 is top-tier, designed for professionals and hardcore gamers who need the best. Consider the CPU's core count and clock speed—more cores and higher speeds mean smoother multitasking and faster performance.

External ports

Prioritize USB 3.0 ports for their brisk data transfer, ensuring quick interactions with flash drives and external hard drives. An HDMI or DisplayPort is essential for a crisp, high-quality display, especially if dual monitors are in the cards. An Ethernet port is your reliable backbone for uninterrupted internet connectivity, a must-have for smooth streaming and online gaming.

Audio jacks remain a staple for plugging in headphones or speakers and are essential for immersive sound experiences. And don’t overlook Thunderbolt 3 or 4 ports, offering a high-speed bridge for data and power in one sleek connection. Select a motherboard that covers this spectrum of ports, which will future-proof your setup for various devices and uses.

Storage

When choosing storage for your desktop computer, it’s crucial to balance size and type based on your needs and budget. Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) offer high capacities, typically ranging from 500GB to several terabytes (TB), at a lower cost, making them ideal for storing large volumes of data like photos and videos. For speed, particularly in booting up and loading applications, Solid State Drives (SSDs) are superior. They usually come in smaller capacities, from 250GB to 2TB, and are more expensive but significantly faster.

How We Selected Desktop Computers

When choosing these desktop computers, I prioritized versatility, affordability, and user-friendliness. I delved into popular consumer choices, focusing on models known for their robust performance and ease-of-use. I explored a range of brands, from industry giants (Apple and HP) to rising contenders such as the relatively new Skytech, ensuring a diverse representation. I looked at reviews and ratings and tried several models in person, including the MAC Mini, iMAC, and HP Envy.

iMac 24-Inch

The iMac 24 impresses with its vibrant 4.5K display and M3 chip's zip, delivering eye-popping visuals and seamless multitasking, making this an obvious choice for both entertainment and work.

Apple's design shines with its minimalism bolstered by fun colors (seven stunning hues including pink and orange) for an eye-catching element in any room of your home.

A variety of ports, including USB-C and Thunderbolt, enhances connectivity options. The built-in FaceTime HD camera and studio-quality microphones are perfect for remote work and video conferencing. I use this model daily, and it has never let me down.

Ready for a Desktop Computing Experience? Our Expert Sascha Brodsky Has This Guidance Before You Buy.

What is the best desktop system for family use?

The ideal desktop system for family use meets the varied demands of household members while offering reliability and ease of use.

All-in-one desktops like the Apple iMac or Dell Inspiron series are excellent candidates, merging computing power with high-definition displays suitable for both work and multimedia enjoyment. These systems present a streamlined profile that minimizes space consumption—a considerable advantage in shared areas.

Storage capacity is ample for the family's digital assets, and multiple USB ports accommodate diverse devices. Integrated webcams and microphones simplify remote communication, enhancing the system's utility for online family interactions. Furthermore, built-in parental controls are essential, providing peace of mind.

Isn’t a desktop an outdated design? Why are desktop computers still such a good value?

Far from being relics of the '80s, desktop computers have evolved, offering unmatched value in today's tech landscape. They deliver superior performance per dollar with more powerful and less expensive components than their mobile counterparts.

Desktops also triumph in upgradability; they can be easily opened to swap out parts, ensuring they keep pace with technological advances. Their ergonomic advantage is significant, too, with larger monitors, full-sized keyboards, and better mouse options that contribute to a more comfortable and productive workspace.

Additionally, desktops tend to have better cooling systems, allowing them to handle heat-intensive tasks for longer periods without throttling performance. For anyone needing a reliable workhorse for gaming, content creation, or heavy-duty computing tasks, desktops are still very much in vogue and a smart, economic choice.

Do I go Mac or PC?

Choosing between a Mac or PC is akin to selecting the right tool for a job. Macs are renowned for their stylish design and user-friendly ecosystem, especially for those already invested in Apple's suite of products. They're trendy among creative professionals who prioritize robust multimedia capabilities.

PCs, in contrast, offer a broad spectrum of configurations, often at a more accessible price point, making them versatile workhorses for gaming, office tasks, and software development.

Your decision should hinge on your specific needs, preferred software, and budget, with each platform having its unique strengths and community of users.

What is the first thing to consider when choosing a desktop computer?

Your compass should be the task you'll demand of it. Are you a digital warrior gearing up for the latest games, requiring a beast of a machine with top-tier graphics and lightning-fast processors? Or are you a creative soul seeking a canvas for your graphic designs and videos, necessitating a system with high-resolution prowess and a rainbow of colors.

On the flip side, if you work primarily with emails, documents, and web surfing, a more modest desktop will carry you through.
