Browne: What is the point?

On Valentine’s Day, NBC news interviewed a very busy “for-hire per custom songwriter” who shared that as he learned more about someone, he “found something to love in everyone.” I’m finding common threads in our town.

Dream of a future where Wichita Falls prospers.  Falls Future 2.0 is in process -- Google and read the report. The future community where your children’s children will live.

“Science and technology revolutionize our lives, but memory, tradition, and myth frame our response,” said Arthur M. Schlesinger, special assistant and “court historian to JFK 1961-63.”  Myths flow freely carpeting the information highway. However, without education, we do not understand our science and technology, nor learn our traditions.

Dozens of organizations throughout our county recognize the importance of a strong high school education in preparation for successful post-secondary educational outcomes. Southwest Rotary of Wichita Falls awarded education grants Monday. Recipients are Fain Elementary, Booker T. Washington Elementary, Haynes Elementary and Café con Leche’s Road to College Summer Program at MSU Texas. In total, 2023 grants from SW Rotary help fund over two dozen organizations reaching thousands of area families.

Sometimes big dreams require big thinking and time for the best ideas to come to fruition. According to the internet, Wichita Falls has called itself “The City That Faith Built” since 1921. People had “faith” in the city to build big and have big dreams, according to the 1920s promotions.

What if we do nothing because we like our town as is? One view follows as we move further online – I like the Falls Future 2.0 vision much better.

I hear Gen X leaders, like my sons and daughter having problems leading the Gen Alpha’s born after 9/11 as part of today's workforce. COVID drove many businesses toward the optimization of transactions to support profits. Now I find stores too full of people loading big carts for online orders.

Their productivity metrics force me to yield to their passage through the warehouse I mistook for a big-box store. And I’m not a person, just a transaction. I’d just live and order online.

I choose businesses that help me build my community and treat each of us as interesting people with something to contribute towards a better future for all. Relationships matter because we are people.
